Busted, Please Help

Got caught passing a car last Friday night in the dark doing 93! It was more like 103 but had a little time to slow down before the radar hit me. Anyway, will cost me 300.00 and some change I need some recomendations on Radar Detectors. I know I should have already had one but couldn't find my brain that day. I am looking at the Bel RX65 as well as the Valentine. What are you all using out there so I can gather some info and get one ordered Thanks

From the experiences I've had the Valentine and it is a great radar detector. I havent used it in my RL yet, but people have had problems with the car setting of the detector from what I've seen. I have mine in my Cobra and it works great.

Yes, I have read about some of those same problems and I just want to make sure I get one that will work. I have also heard great things about the Valentine. I have had a couple of Bel units in the past that worked fine but they are pretty outdated if I can even find them. Thanks for the feedback

I have the V1 in the S2000 and had an 8500 in the RL until it was sold on ebay in favor of another V1.

I love my V1's, I really do.

I have great luck with the Valentine-1

Used in BMW's, a new TL, and my new RL and it always worked great! I mounted it to the right of the rearview mirror, below the tint band and it picked up lots of Kband before I even saw them. It even picked up K behind me. The arrows telling you where the radar is saves you alot of worry too. Just get it level, with a view in front and in back, and it will do the rest. Alot of people even hardwire them in and get the remote display, etc.. Great product, they can repair them and update them for you too, and they have great range. DanF

I have had 2 V1s for myself. I put a 3rd one in our RX300 and have gotten two friends to get the V1 also for three other vehicles. Everybody loves theirs. I have not had the problem with the V1 working with the RL.

Wow! It looks like I should go with the V1 vs the Bel. The V1 is just a bit more but sounds worth every penny. Thanks for the help everyone

And even better when you mate it with the option accessories! ie- remote display and remote speaker (for motorcycles and convertibles)!

Yeah - Do you have a AAA membership? I read somewhere that if you do, they will pay upto $500 of legal fees for fighting a ticket. If you have their gold membership it goes up to $1500 for legal fees. I am not sure if this is correct or not - but worth looking into.

Is your Cobra an original or a replica? My neighbor has a very nice original that I have been lusting after since I saw it. A detector seems to be a must have for a car like the Cobra.

One more vote for the Valentine 1. It has saved me many a time.

I like the directional arrows of the V1, but compared to the Bel the V1 is way too sensitive and picks up a lot of false alarms. There is just no way that it could pick up 6 radars when passing by a mall. I use it only in open roads.

There is an aftermarket unit that can be retrofitted into your brain that just tells your right foot not to push on the throttle so hard. I got mine when I turned 25 years old and it has been working flawlessly since. The unit simply overrides the "laws of the land don't apply to me" software and installs a "what the hell is my hurry anyway" command. If you give the money you were going to spend on a radar detector to a worthy charity, the unit will also uplink to a continuously updating program that tells your brain that you don't need to drive faster than everyone else to feel powerful and important.
I apologize for the sermon, but the simple fact is that if you don't speed, you don't get speeding tickets. Some guy who wanted to get to work two minutes sooner by driving twice the posted speed limit killed a good friend of mine. Not surprisingly, excessive speed was determined to be the cause of the accident.

The escort seems to beat the v1 even and for the money that seems like the way to go. I don't really speed and only keep up with the flow of traffic but it is still nice to know and get a reminder beep to make you check your speed. I may pick one of these up.

I am very sorry about your loss and as stated - if you don't want a ticket, just don't speed. If you are going to speed - radar detector will help avoid one, but is no guarantee.

Went with the Bel

Well, after doing some of my own research, I decided on the Bel RX65 It seemed to edge the V1 and the Passport out in range and less false signals. I like the directional arrows on the V1 but I don't like how it looks in the car and it was 70.00 more then the Bel.

As for my lead foot? Well, to each his own I just enjoy driving a little faster then the posted speed limits sometimes. I seem to get my ticket about once every 3 years Hopefully the Bel will make it once every 6 Thanks for all of your inputs

Not a bad choice. I am less confident of my V1 after a recent encounter with a police radar. I was driving on a road with many cars that were going faster than I was. At the moment my vision opens beyound a blind curve, the V1 sounded simultaneously the moment I made eye contact with the cop. I would expect the V1 provided advanced warnings when the other cars ahead of me were radared.

No. I was less than 5 mph above the limit, whereas the other cars were at least 10 mph above. I would be pissed for being singled out if I had gotten a ticket.

Enjoy your trip and becareful.

No Cops:)

Well, it figures Went on a 500 mile trek this weekend with the new Bel RX 65 and didn't see one cop Besides that, it worked great. Very few false signals and the auto mute works great
