Bose "AudioPilot"
Bose "AudioPilot"
The RL has this Bose 'anti-noise" feature in the car. It's supposed to cancel out some low frequency noises such as road and engine rumbles. Has anyone noticed this really working? You can disable it to test the difference. I don't hear a change.
Anyone else have an opinion?

no you can't disable the noise cancellation thing.
The audiopilot feature just adjusts the sound to help with ambient sounds like say if you have the windows open.
I find it to not have any notcieable use.

I have tried it many times, it works, best way to tell the difference is to be on the expressway at a constant speed, turn the radio off or no volume. Then put your hand on and off of the mic which is in overhead controls, as you do the on/off you will notice slight reduction in a low frequency sound, guess around 100 hz.

With the audio system off, hold the "1" and "6" buttons down then press the audio volume button in to turn the system on. It's now in Diagnostic mode.
Pressing the "1" button will turn the ANC on or off. You will see "ANC On" or "ANC Off" in the upper audio display. When the ANC is off you can verify that it is off by covering the ANC mic with your finger and noticing no low rumbling sounds. I drove to work one morning with ANC off and didn't notice a whole lot of difference.

Oh, and the Audio Pilot....If I cover the mic with my finger I hear a low pitch drone (boom) introduced in the cabin. Subtle but it is there. It allows Honda to use less sound insulation (weight savings) in our porky RL. It does not address higher pitch sound, such as tire whine (unfortunately)

Well, I'll be dipped... you're right. I guess the memories are awfully fuzzy after not seeing a show for 20+ years.
And I'm surprised that those cars ran long enough for them to shoot the opening credits.....

Yes, we have a winner!
It was a Sunbeam "Tiger". Not gonna find many of those around anymore. Company went out of business years ago.
Here's a good synopsis at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunbeam_Tiger
Here's a photo of it (complete with hood mounted machine gun). I could use that in rush hour traffic!

Update: I tried the suggestion of covering the microphone. Amazing what a difference it made. You immediately hear the groan of the engine. I've gotten so used to the "silence" that it seemed like the engine was sick. I had to get into my Sienna van and listen to realize that engine sound is usually there with the other car also. I suppose I just got used to it and never paid attention.
By the way; seems there are two microphones; one in the back seat also. To really get the effect you need someone in the back covering the back mic also.
