06 Door Handles and Nav Questions
06 Door Handles and Nav Questions
Shopping for an '06 RL out of the US to bring back here to Canada and doing some research, leading me to a few questions:
- from threads on here I see that failed door handles seem to be a common and recurring issue...when they start acting up, can the car still be locked and unlocked with the remote/keyfob at least? Or can you be locked out of the car / or unable to lock it? One big negative is I am told Acura does not honor the warranty in Canada on US market cars
- is there a different nav disc version for Canadian spec cars vs US spec? Or was it a single/common version disc for detailed North American maps that covers both countries?

Yes, you can still use the remote to lock/unlock the doors when the handles fail. By "failing", I am assuming you mean when water gets into them and they don't work. They just have to dry out and they'll be fine. I've run into this 4-5 times in the past 2 years, its really not a big deal.
As far as the NAV disc goes, I'm not sure.
Why do you want a US spec car? I thought you guys got some cool options up there we did not get?
Chris
look on the acura navi site, and you will see there are two discs, one for the US, which includes about a 100 mile swatch of southern Canada. I believe there is another disc, which does not show up in my choice because I have a US IP address, but I recall seeing this in an advisory when I bought an update. The coverage should also be detailed in the Navi manual.

By the way, 4.81 is on sale for $149 right now.

There are individual disks for the US and Canada. I believe the Canadian disk may come with the US disk (but perhaps at a price). The US disk doesn't come with a Canadian one. Best bet is to call acuranavi at (888) 549-3798 (number may be different in Canada).

just to clarify, there are 2 different issues with the door handle:
1. temporary not working after getting wet (it has to do with the touch technology, it does not get wet "inside"). I've only had this happen after a car wash and never in the rain. Problem usually goes away after a few minutes.
2. failing to lock no water involved. This was mostly with 05s, but I believe problem did persist in some 06. Usually, the failure was intermittent, but frequent enough to be a problem and requires door handle to be replaced. The problem was most noted for locking the car - I don't recall anyone complaining about unlocking.

Thanks - so in the "failing to lock" scenario, it is still possible to lock the doors manually? Or is the car left unlocked and vulnerable when this happens until the handle is fixed or the problem goes away?
As far as getting a US car - I can save about $12-15K by getting a US market '06 RL vs a comparable mileage Canadian car for sale up here. And, limited salt exposure, etc when I am looking mainly in southern states
I'll forego the ventilated/cooled seats we got up here!
