05 RL, DVD/Nav unit removal question

Hey all, I appreciate you taking the time to read this...I did a search on DVD removal and Navigation removal and didn't find any threads so I apologize is this is out there already.

(2005 RL) The little door that I think says PMIC Card on the DVD/Nav unit in the trunk must have been popped off somehow and not my Nav will not work. I took it to the dealer and they want 800 to remove, send in for repair and install back. I've seen on here that I can send to Alpine for less than 200 they will diagnose/repair so that is a much cheaper option. The dealer wants to charge an hour labor to remove and than and hour labor to reinstall which is comes to about 250 (125 x2). Before I take that option I wanted to see if anyone out there had some basic instructions on how to remove it myself and also ask if it is difficult.

So any advice or info would be great...again, thanks for reading!

Glen

I have seen lots of comments on R&R of this part under navtool topics. So I would search navtool if I were you. The hardest part I hear is removing the carpet. I would go ahead and order new clips so it will go together tight like factory when you reinstall.

So you want to remove the player in the trunk?

If you climb in and look at it after pulling the carpet back its pretty clear.

Just a few bolts and a couple of plugs, definitely WAY easier than pulling out the dash unit.

Heavy must be feeling modest today. Here is his own write-up on getting to the NAV unit.

I would be wary of sending the unit off for repair. You could probably buy a new/used one for equal or lesser cost.

thanks again everyone, oo7spy - why do you say be weary of sending it it? I got the idea from the folks here on the forum from when I was searching the issue. I called Alpine and their OEM repari center for Acura is CA. I called over there and for $160 they will examine and repair and send it back to me. If they cannot repair the contact me and I don't have to pay the $160. Do you think they are shady or something?

I would not have any problem sending it of to Alpine, I am sure they are very competent. Just send it with a tracking number and insure it and you'll be fine. And pack it well enough that you would drop the box from chest height without worrying. (don't ask how I know).
