05 electrical problem, need help...

I need some help please. I have a 2005 RL

Car's batery got drained for some reason earlier in the week. Was able to charge battery and start the car with the key tonight. I noticed when I started the car the OnStar came on and was asking me something, can't remember what as the alarm was ringing!

I noticed that Fuse 7 Backup was blown. When I put a new one in it blows again. Did this several times, with the same result, blown fuse. So right now, the Navi screen does not even come on, can't open fuel filler door at all except manually, door locks don't work except manually & the fuel gauge is acting weird. Also, the two key fobs don't work at all.
The radio works when I put in the code, and everything else seems to be ok.

So I have no idea where to start in debugging this problem.
Any ideas????

Sounds like a short in the system somewhere. I also try to do alot myself but my next step would be a trip to the dealer. I am sure they will charge you to diagnose the problem but will need to give you an estimate laying out the work to be done before it costs you too much. At that point you could determine if it is something you want to attempt on your own.

Sent the car to teh dealer yesterday. Got the call that it was the passenger door handle. I guess those sensors go from time to time.

I'm having simular electrical problems with my 05. The dealer changed the drivers door handle which fixed my original problems, but now the beeper is not beeping when you use the key fob to unlock the doors and the main power window lock off switch is intermitant. Also the drivers door handle is only working when it wants to! The dealer says it's the passanger door handle and is changing it tomorrow.

I think that both door handles were bad. only one caused a short.
The other one doesn't work right now, but I don't feel the need to change it just yet.

Sorry to put this in here but its the closest topic to my question. What does the display mode button do? It is a really easy question I know, but I just bought the car used and have no manual. The button does nothing when I push it so please don't answer that I should push it and find out.
Thank you

You should start a new thread - I don't see how this thread is anywhere close to your question

The display mode button toggles your nav screen from day mode to night mode and off.

Bob, are you sure he isn't referring to the button that toggles through the display on the upper display (for the radio & temp) on top of the dash?

That one will toggle through the display modes for XM (Station->Station name->artist->title)

Sorry, it won't let me start a thread until 15 days and that is longer than I have to get any problems fixed under 30 day warranty it came with. Its not the day/night swith so ok, I guess it just tells you the outside temp and radio info? Thanks, and sorry again about wrong thread, I just didn't know if it was something I would need.

I have found what I suspect is another cause of battery drain. I had to leave my 2005 RL at a cruise parking lot for three weeks. When I returned I was told the key was in the car since the lot was fenced and guarded 24 hours. The driver's door was unlocked and the keyless ignition device was on the console. The battery was dead. I suspect that the key's presence for 3 weeks kept the car "on alert" for action and that caused the battery to die. If so parking valets etc. should be alerted to avoid leaving the key in the car.

yes, I would assume that to be a fine deduction.

Doubtful. Quite a few people have lost fobs in their car and remote systens require the transmitter to be placed inside. That would be a glaring engineering oversight.

On the other hand, a three week cruise sounds delightful.
