Wiper Noise

Since I live in rainy city Portland, the wiper is quite active in winter season. The wiper noise is quite excessive when it moves from the initial position, stops and turns around. Today I compared with TL which is a loaner car from the dealer. The TL is much more quiet.

I even applied a tablet from Acura which cleans the film on the windshield. No improvement since during wiping there is not much noise. only when the wiper changes its direction.

Is there any way to adjust or tighten wiper mechanism?
How quiet is your wiper?

I picked my RL up in the rain and immediately turned around and had they replace the wipers because of the noise they were making. They're better but not good enough and I'm going back on Friday to have it fixed again. They should be pretty much silent.

I do not believe they are adjustable.

The wipers on my RL dont make any noise. I just drove a TSX loaner today and the wipers on that car made allot of noise.

I think you need to clarify if it's mechanical noise or wiper blade noise.

If the mechanism itself is clunking or grinding or whatever, that's a different issue from screaks and scronks from the wiper blade's action against the window surface. If it's mechanical, there's things they can do for that.

Cold rubber will of course harden, and sometimes at the end of the arc of travel the wiper blade will "thump" as it changes directions. I think what's happening is that the hard rubber actually jumps up off the window briefly as it's jerked in the opposite direction by the wiper arm and then clunks back down.

The fix for the wiper blade noise is new blades, a different compound of blade, or move to a warmer climate.

I have noticed the same problem - even in the warm DFW climate! I'll try new blades to see if that corrects the problem.

Agree. Which is it?

I hear no noise with the use of my wipers.

Thanks Mike.
I don't know for sure. There is no noise during wiping itself. Since my RL is two month old, i didn't suspect the rubber. But it was sitting in the dealer's lot for acouple of months. Maybe the rubber was hardend. Let me try new blade. Get you updated.

Mine is less than two months old and I'm having the wiper blades (and arms if necessary) replaced under warranty (tomorrow). You shouldn't have to pay for yours.

To clarify, the noise I hear is not mechanical. I'll get the blades replaced (when the grommets are installed) and see if this fixes the problem. It is rather annoying.

Well, it was raining this morning when I brought the car in and the wipers were squeaking. They replaced the blades (or inserts as they insist on calling them) stating the problem has been fixed. Unfortnately it had stopped raining before they finished so I can't tell for sure.

I'll bet that fixed it ... I'm in the DFW area, too, and mine are quiet as a mouse.

Just to revive an older thread...

Changing my inserts did not fix the problem. I'm on my third set and each time they would be silent for a little while and then start to squeak at each end of the arc...little or a lot of rain...doesn't matter.

This past Saturday, I dropped my son off at a friends house. On the way home it started raining (of course I just washed the car earlier in the day...so the rain was my own fault) and the wipers started to "sound off." I called my service rep. (11:45 P.M.) and left a message.

He called back a little while ago and said they were just informed of a TSB where they will be replacing the inserts, wiper arms, linkages, and possibly motor. Apparently, it's not such a small issue.

He ordered the parts and will let me know when they arrive. Say what you may about Acura but my service experience has been exemplary.

Hope it works this time.

Wow, that's interesting. Must be a spotty problem, as mine has been perfect.

Let us know how it works out.

How quiet is your wiper?

Take a good look at your windshield. Does rain sheet or does rain leave droplets...like its been treated with some sort of rainshield...don't be fooled...my '05 windshield was coated with some foreign, hard to see or diagnose, sticky substance. Water beaded up on it.

Whatever it was severely affected the wipers. The wipers made a loud swishing type noise as they moved/dragged across the windshield. They also left non-wiped areas and were noisy because they jumped/bounced about over part of their stroke.

I thought the problem was with the blades and even had them replaced under warranty. However while riding around with my brother that first Christmas Eve I had the car, neither of us could see the road in the rain because of the streaking...he immediately commented that something was on the windshield.

I later determined that something was on *all* the windows. In fact, I've still got suction cup marks on the insides of the rear door windows...shows up in rainy weather or conditions causing a slight fogging. I used a conservative glass polish with a Porter orbital, and the windshield is finally free of that stuff...water now sheets instead of beading up, and the blade leaves a clean swath. However, I'm not sure my buffing did too much for it...I was afraid to use any stronger windshield polish, even though I had some...I was using Griots glass polish. I think being out in the weather finally did the trick. I recently noticed that the windshield is sheeting normally.

BTW, I got no help/advice from a dealer when I asked about this. I inquired about what they used when prepping the glass and was told that they used the windshield washer solvent.

Another update on my wiper noise issue...

Had the RL in yesterday for the changing of all wiper drivetrain components. While there, I got the oil changed (free) and tires rotated (not free) for the B1 service (skipped the "inspect belts, brakes, hoses, etc. for another $60 or so...I figure at 7,500 miles that stuff should be O.K.). Also had them install the tie-down plugs that were missing, add a small missing fastner under the hood near the battery cover (discovered while jumping th eMDX), had them check the ignition as it was on occasion, difficult to turn (didn't find anything), and asked them check the headrest release button as it was very sticky (they ordered a new assembly...couldn't replace jsut the button).

Anyway, I still don't know if the wipers will be quiet as I need to drive it for a while in the rain but I'm hoping...BUT, when I picked up the car and looked at the wipers, I gave tehm a little tug to pop them into the winter position and they smoothly pulled up all the way...no winter stop.

They will fix that when the headrest switch assembly comes in.

More to come...
