Weird Noise From Belt/Engine When Idle

Hello, I have a 05 RL that I bought a few months back. There is a weird noise coming from either one of the belts or the engine. I'm not too sure but I posted a video here to see if anyone can help me diagnose what the noise is. Car has about 130k, timing belt was changed around 105k. Thanks.

Sounds like it could be the drive belt tensioner.

Are you talking about the faint whistle?

Thanks for your reply. I will try to check that out to see if it is the belt tensioner.

I was actually referring to the whirring(?) sound that seems like its coming from a belt or tensioner. As mentioned by sj993 above, I will see if it is the drive belt tensioner.

I actually did not notice the whistle until you mentioned it. I've read the forum regarding the whining/whirring sound that occurs at 30-40mph and 70-80mph which happens to my car as well. Would the whistle be related to the propeller shaft/differential issue or is it something else?

The whistle you hear at speed (30-40 and 70-80) as you mentioned is usually related to the driveshaft. I had a whistle at 30 and it turned out to be the center support bearing attached to the driveshaft which the only fix is to replace the driveshaft. There is a technical service bulletin about it.

thanks for the reply.

I am working on getting the parts for the drive belt and the drive belt tensioner. Looking over the service manual to see how to remove the drive belt and the tensioner, but can't seem to find it in there. Anyone know what section it is located in? I've looked in the "Cylinder Head" PDF and it states to "see (DRIVE BELT REPLACEMENT ) and "see DRIVE BELT INSPECTION". however I can't locate that section.

Disregard the question above regarding the location of the drive belt. I found it in the Charging System document.

Sounds like drive belt slap or the tensioner. Check the tension of the drive belt by pushing down on it (it shouldn't have too much play). With engine running, have someone rev it up slowly and see if noise changes.

I've checked the drive belt and there isn't much play. pretty stiff, I've also checked the tensioner and it isn't loose at all. I had someone rev slowly and the noise is still there. What would that mean? I should also mention the drive belt looks fine, no cracks.

im dealing with the same issue on a 06 tl. i changed the drive belt and tensioner assembly and noise still there. it goes away at 3k rpm but at idle i hear the same noise you got. idk the only other belt or pulleys are in the timing, just a thought I'm gonna take mine apart and check the timing components and belt to see if they bad.. good luck

Finally able to work on my car and had the issue resolved by replacing the auto-tensioner assembly and the pulley. Had some trouble getting tensioner to releases but in the end the noise is gone. took about 2 hours to do. good luck on getting your issue fixed.
