there are lots of pros and cons of an extended warranty but I decided to get one.
One of the reasons I bought an Acura/Japanese vehicle is that I don't EXPECT to have problems. But, as the nice man selling the extended warranty pointed out, there are a number of pretty expensive items that are covered under the warranty. So I calculate that very possibly using it once may well pay for itself.
Prior to this, had a Chrysler van and believe me, I felt like I got my money's worth out of the extended warranty on it (I know NOT apples to apples <g>).

I didn't buy one on my Acura, because I leased it, and the warranty more than covers my expected lease mileage.
I did buy it on my last Honda, though (it's the same warranty... and I bought it because the lease was 36mo 15K miles/yr and the Honda warranty was only 36/36K, and it's not smart to lease a vehicle out of waranty...) and the dealer actually tried to talk me OUT of it.... which is pretty funny. Now, my mother's driving that car (bought it out of the lease) and 4 years later (knock wood) there hasn't been a single warranty repair done on the car -- gas, oil, wiper blades, brake pads, and tires are the only things it's needed.
Of course, my Acura experience hasn't been quite as trouble-free, but I won't have the car more than 3 years.

I bought the extended warranty
I have never purchased an extended warranty on any vehicle before, but I bought one for the RL. I tend to keep cars for over 100,000 miles and with all the electronics in the new RL, I deemed it prudent. Hope I never need it, but glad I did it.

They are almost in the same category as the paint protection/ paint coating schemes and other dealer packages that are offered to you as you are about to sign the papers.

Just before I signed I stated that I want 100K mile warranty. The dealer wanted the sale so the 100K was free.

I am going to purchase one in the next few days. As 1HOT NSX mentioned, Honda/Acura products are stellar. For me, I am hoping to never use it. Having owned 1 Honda and now 2 Acura's I haven't had any real issues, but the RL is very high-tech...so I'm going to get a 6yr/100k warranty. I just got a new job that entails some local travel so my mileage will be about 18K-20K/yearly.

just try pricing various electronic parts used in these cars, let alone the transmission/rear end! Then add in the labor!!!
Sure you do not need it if you unload your car every few years or at about 50/60k miles, but if you keep it over 5 years & put over 70k miles on it, odds are good you will easily need to replace an expensive electronic gizmo between then & 100k miles.....!

Most extended warranties are not worth it for individuals. The manufacturer is betting that they won't lose money on the warranty; you're betting that they will. The manufacturer has a lot more information to go on than you do.

I did without hesitation. Let me tell you why.
I've always rejected extended warranties because I've typically purchased Honda and Toyota products.
Two years ago we bought a brand new 2004 Toyota Land Cruiser. The epitome of rock solid reliability. Owned a '98 before that.
Since the 2004 came with more electronics, I sprung for the warranty which put me back $1,400. This past winter my wife calls telling me that she is getting a wierd error message on the multi-function (Nav) screen. Additionally the climate control, audio, nav, back-up camera and trip computer were no longer functioning.
I remember reading on the Land Cruiser forums something about this so I immediately called the dealer. Keep in mind that I bought the Toyota version of this SUV, not the Lexus. So my bumper-to-bumper warranty is 3yr/36k miles and 5yr/60k miles on the powertrain. My odometer was at 40k miles. There was a TSB out on this problem stating that the screen was redesigned but the part cost was a whopping $5,000!!! Yes $5K! The problem was technically out of warranty and it's unknown whether I would have gotten any good will on this, but it's safe to say that it would of fallen far short of a full replacement.
So... my $1,400 investment paid for a $5K part, and I still have over 55k miles remaining on the warranty.
With all the electronics on the RL, it was a no-brainer for me, especially since it only cost me $1,100.
