Vented Seat Mod....

I was brainstorming last night after a few Heinekens and had a thought. RobL, or any other members in Canada, can you guys contact the parts department at your local dealerships and ask them if they have the complete parts list of things need to have the cooled seats you guys have. I'm not sure what the parts breakdown is or what is used to actually bring the air through the seats. If it is a fan inside the seats, then maybe I can re-route the rear floor A/C ducts into fans to deliever REAL A/C seats=)

I bring this up because when I was in my teens I worked at an auto upholstery shop and learned that taking seats apart is pretty easy, so I think if I had all the parts I could convert my seats to vented/heated

It would probably be cheaper to do it this way. I have a feeling the seats themselves could be a couple of grand each, I probably could get away with $1,000 or less doing it myself, and route the A/C ducts if possible.

The system has 2 fans...one in the seat bottom and one in the seat back. There is a motor there that draws the ambient air into the system which then pumps it out through the fans.

I'd guess that the best option would be to get an after market system that is better and can do real cooling....I'm sure they must sell sweet systems for cars as I saw them put one in a car on pimp my ride.

I looked around a little bit and didnt find anything, I'll just call an Acura Dealer up there and see what price I can get the stuff for if they have it. I'll post the info when I find out if anyone else is interested.

I would be interested in hearing this also. I probably won't do it because I am sure it will be too costly.

Peep this

Those are the guys who make the active system found in the M, LS430, etc

Their system is what you need to get

I feel ripped off now that we got the inferior system in our RLs here. I want the kick ass system that actually cools the air.

Just out of curiosity, I called a dealership in Toronto and asked which parts I would need to have the ventilated seats and how much it would cost. The only info that the parts guy could give me was that I would need to replace "all of the leather parts" of the 2 front seats. $2700.00 CAD

do you guys have perforated seats in your RL? I dont see why the leather would need to be replaced if you guys do.

Its perforated, yes. Without seeing the service manual, I'm not sure why the seats would need to be replaced. Perhaps the "ventilation system" parts are built into the cushion/cover part of the seats.

Well one thing I didnt say was that my idea was foolproof......although I doubt that what the dealer's part computer told them I couldnt overcome. The leather is perforated there shouldnt be an issue. Besides there had to be some sort of a cut-out or indent in the seat foams for it to become an issue for install, and for the sake of "manufacturing costs", I'm sure things dont stray far from the other cars. Most cars have wiring harnesses for things they dont have.....i.e. my 95 V6 Mustang had the harnesses behind the bumper for the GT foglights and the wiring harness for the switch in the console, althought I had no fog lights from the factory.

It increases production costs to alter a model on an assembly line. If I'm not mistaken, all RL's are produced in Japan, therefore, why would they alter all of those different things just so Canada and Japan could have Vented seats, yet they make a completely different seat for the US, it doesnt make much sense to me or the beancounters at American Honda if you know what I mean

Parts shown at dealer in US

I've seen the parts picture in the US for this. The part numbers are not listed, but it looks as though the seats are exactly the same for the US and Canada...just that the US is missing the installed parts.

The big question is:

Can you buy ONLY the parts needed ?

I do. hehe

The other beauty with our seats is that there are 3 diff settings for heating and ventilation. For heating it is diff levels of heat and with the ventilation it is just fan speed.

I love the system in the LS430...there's like 12 diff settings you can have between cooling, ventilation and heating.
