thinking about selling the RL

Well guys, even though it pains me to even think about selling my car I think the time has come for me to let it go... I wanted to see what you guys think is a realistic asking price for my 06 with 77k on the clock.

Current mods:
H+R springs with aspec struts
Wood shift knob
Aspec lip kit w/ decklid
19in M3 style wheels
independent switch for fog lights
Also going to include a set of stockers and aspec springs never used

I have a price in mind, but I want to see what the rest of you guys think is fair blue book private party is 19,500 excellent condition plus about 4k in the lipkit wheels + tires, and suspension I was thinkin around 20k being a more than fair price.

I just wanted some fellow azine opinons before I make the final decision so lmk what you guys think

lol, take off your aftermarket parts and sell them to me and then sell the car for 20K plus. You come out ahead on both fronts.

ha if your car is white and you want to exchange bumpers I would probably do it, because the lips are permanently affixed to the car, we may be able to work the wheels out but the rest is just going to give me a headache...

lol, actually... the car is white. Hopefully, I can sell my old TL parts and then I might have the money for everything. Where are you located by the way?

Haha, you never know! I was willing to drive there to pick up an RL. The funny thing about that is I found another RL in Houston, TX even farther away. Oh well, if you decide to part out keep me in mind and hopefully we can work something out! Good luck with your pondering sale, and hopefully you will get a fair value for you car.

Any thoughts on what you are going to get next?

If it's a popular color Black, White, Silver and everything is in good shape I think 20K with the mods is definitely fair. Do you have a picture of the car (curious about the rims)?

Read on the BMW 335 and 535 fuel system problems. I have 4 friends with BMWs running this engine (N54) and they ALL had their fuel pumps and injectors replaced at least once. One of them is on his 3rd fuel pump!!!
It is a huge problem. BMW extended the warranty on the fuel system but you may not want to be stuck on the side of the road...multiple times. ...just my 2 cents.

I would love a 335, you're young. The 3 series is sporty and slick. Just remember you'll have exorbitant costs on maintenance when the warranty runs out.

335i is a sweet car. get one under warranty. off warranty it will cost an arm and a leg to work on.

are you single? no kids? if so, why not just screw a 4 door sedan and get a 2 seater sports cars or roadster like a Boxster or Cayman. You will NEVER find a car as fun as either one of those. youc an find nice low m ileage models of either for the same you will spend on a 335i or G37 - and even a newer base model boxster will be 10x as fun as any 335i... maybe not as fast as a chipped 335i.. but i'd take a boxsxster over a 335i ANY day.. *IF* I was single/no kids.

why do you need back seats... ??? if you want sporty... just go all the way. 2 seater.

S2000
RX8
Boxster
Cayman
etc etc

I had a 2000 base model... up until a month of so ago... I got sick of it nickel and diming me to death.. but for how little it cost me to ge tinto it.. it was bad a$$. the handling on that thing was unreal... drop the top on a nice day... so much fun.

downside for me.. between work and family.. I only put 5000 miles on teh car in the past TWO years... it wasn't worth the expenses for how little seat time I got in it...but if I were young/single..it would have been out every weekend!! if you are young, single, no kids... and you don't live in an area where it snows half the year... if you are in a place that gets nice weather... a roadster is FUN. an open sunroof is NOTHING like the top down.. chicks dig it too...

the caymans are nice too.... 911s are head turners..but overpriced for what you get... they don't handle all that well anyway.. a boxster or cayman will outhandle them.. you could get into a sweet boxster or cayman, late model for $30-something.. 30-35 woudl ge a bad ass boxster or caymna. they are fast too... hp numbers are not super high..but they are light.. mine was like 2700 lbs... it only had 217hp...but it was EASILY faster than my RL... a newer one has 245...with S models getting up closer to 300.. a new boxster S woudl be FASTER THAN $HIT....

the sound they make when they are waioling toward redline woudl make you jizz in your pants....

S2000 is inexpensive to purchase and maintain. Sure there's not much torque but it is nevertheless one of the most entertaining rides on the road. 335i is also a good option that gives you more luxury and a (tiny) back seat to use in an emergency.

BTW, +1 on taking off your wheels and selling them separately. You will make more money that way.

well im 6'3 so I don't think I would look right sitting in a boxster or a s2000, but I definitely want to get into something a lot lighter and a little smaller... or I might just pick up a nice little DD and start saving for something else rather than quickly jumping into my payment...we shall see though thanks for all the inputs

I have a 2008 335Xi coupe that replaced my 2005 RL almost 3 years ago. Awesome car. A 3 series (especially a 335) will spoil you for anything else. The power on tap just feels unlimited when you drive that car and the handling just can't be duplicated by any other car. As far as warranty, yes, you won't want to own it without a warranty but you can get it as a CPO or have it CPO'd and that will take care of a lot of worries. Regarding the HP fuel pump issue, never had a failure and with it being warranted until 120K, I wouldn't even worry about it.

That being said, my BMW lease is up in April '11 and I'm going back to the RL. The 2G RL (along with the E90 3 series) is just about the only car that I am willing to own repeatedly. I loved my last 2005 but my wife didn't (I bought it for her) so I sold it & bought the 335Xi to replace it. Now she has a CPO BMW X3 and the 335Xi which I drive will go back at lease end. I found a gorgeous 2005 RL at a great price that I'm looking at next week. If I like it, I'll probably buy it on the spot. My goal is to buy & own a car that I can drive until 200K and to pay cash for it so I won't have a car payment. Having driven Acuras and Hondas since 1990, I definitely feel better about doing that with an Acura than a BMW. What's that old saying, something like "drive german but own japanese"? It's true in my book.

6'3"... you'd fit but yeah it would be tight.. I"m only 5'9"... I fit just fine.. there are some drawbacks to being tall!!

honestly.. a 911 GT3 woudl look cooler, but wouldn't be any more fun than a cayman or boxster. trust me...

fun does not necessarily equate with speed / price. As I"ve grown older I"ve come to realize and accept that fact. I used to think my car had to be fast to be fun.... not true. Test drive a miata.. wow are they fun! not very fast at all.but piles of fun. Another fun mazda..the RX8. ZERO torque...not that fast... but the whole thing, how it sounds, how it's setup, how it handles.. for what you pay, it is easily as fun as cars costing twice as much... I almost bought an RX8 instead of my boxster...

i test drove a late model EVO X.. i hated that thing. it was fast but felt like a POS civic witht a turbo on it.. the Rx8 was FAR slower, but felt like a true sports car....

if you want something pretty fast but luxurious, a 335i is a great choice. only drawback is 3 seris are everywhere..it's a generic car.. you'd have to do some mods to wheels or something to sets yours apart from everyone elses...

upside to the 335i s that with just a chip they are insanely fast.. 12s... that is fast.

Poppin we are in the same book. I just cant get rid of the RL. Its such a nice car. I had the car since I was 19 and I didnt appreciate the vehicle at first because I had a 3G TL and trade it in to get the car. After a while I fell in love with it and realized in the sports sedan class (v6 enemies) the RL is a lot of car.

Aspec, rims and drop. I personally feel its one of the most sweetest cars to look at on the road.

And yes I am also looking to get a G37 IF I CAN LET go of the RL

yea I don't think you could get a better car for the money in terms of technology comfort and reliability, the only downside for the car is the power I feel like its tugging rather than pulling if that makes any sense.... I would probably keep the RL for the rest of my life if it had like 100 more hp because exterior styling is awesome aspec breaks necks...I remember I drove by some guy in a white TL one day and his head snapped back so quick I couldn't help but laugh... I'll tell you what though i'm not selling it unless I get the price I want for it cause it's worth every penny, I mean what flagship could go until 300k

Don't jump to that conclusion! I'm also a big guy and the Boxster had way more room than a 911. Honestly, a 911 is never gonna happen for me, but a Boxster was actually comfortable.

Actually if I kept the RL for my life and i had unlimited funds, well I don't know if this is possible, but anything is possible with money. I would swap in the new tl-s sh-awd with the 6 speed with some FI, dump the car on coils, buy a ballin set of wheels like ambig or steve, redo the interior in red and switch the apspec front to the mugen and leave the aspec sides and rear......if anyone would like to donate let me know haha

If I won the lotto, I'd sell the RL and....buy an M5... ....... maybe a 911 Turbo and a Ferrari to fill up hte other garage bays in the mansion I'd buy... and of course, I'd have to find some young hotties to fill up my pool....

you will all be invited! as soon as I win the lotto, get the mansion, the pool, the cars, and the hotties, I'll send out evites...

hahahahahahahahaha

I had a 2000 boxster but recently sold it... that car was a BLAST to drive, and was relatively cheap to buy..but upkeep was a slow death by razor cuts / nickel and dimed me to death... got rid of it to stop the bleeding... if I did it again, I'd just buy a nwere one that was CPO... the new boxsters are fast too! the S2000 would be more reliable..but it was way smaller and mor ecramped...

an RX8 would be a nice car you coudl check out.. no torque but loads of fun to drive. i didn't think I woudl lke it as much as I did before I drove it..but behidn the wheel.. it was a total blast. the rotary was cool to rev up to 9k... i drove one iwth a mazdaspeed intake/exhaust and it sounded GREAT and was quick enough to be a lot off un. handling is really good and the rear seats are usable for full sized adults.... mazda also added a 100k engine warranty to ALL RX8s.. so you coudl get a used one off the used car market and even though you have NO factory warranty.. you get hte mazda motor warranty..they all have it now..

335i is an awesome car but will cost you a fair amount.. you'd proably sell your RL in the high teens / low 20s..and a really nice low mileage 335i is going to run you high 20s low 30s at least....

cool part of the 335i is you can chip it and make it SCREAM.

good luck and let us know if you keep the RL or actually sell it

I think im gonna actually forget about the car for now and just get into something like an 02-03 cl/tl type s because I don't want to have too much of my money tied up in a vehicle, There really is no need for me to have it, don't get me wrong I love the car and it will probably be tough to let the RL go but I realize there is a difference between needs and wants and at the end of the day it has been a blessing to own one but I don't need it
