Guys, I noticed a strange sound coming from "The RL" today. It started today while coming to a stop applying the brakes. The best way to describe it is like the sound old school U-Joints in the drive-shaft right before they are about to break (squeak squeak). It only happens upon applying the brakes (nothing while driving or turning). I have checked the entire under carriage and see nothing out of the ordinary (nothing stuck around brakes, calipers, protective metal shield, CV shafts etc.). Any ideas what it could be or have any of you guys experienced this? Thanks in advance!

 

Wear indicators on the pads?

 

Nope getakey, had them replaced last month all the way around and indicator is nowhere close to the rotor.

 

did you turn your rotors when you changed your pads?

 

Mixwell, new brakes and new rotors.

 

Might be related the issue on my '05. Had similar creaking noise on low speed braking. Turns out the is an issue with the calipers and they have to be replaced ($$$). I guess there was an advisory, but I'm long past warranty.

 

I was thinking along those lines since it only happens when the brakes are applied at slow speeds. I was hoping for something "easy and simple" like something caught or debris. I have an 06, so waaay past warranty as well. When you say "they" are we talking 2 (which 2) or all 4?

 

Your calipers and other brake parts could probably use some grease.

 

Grease worked for all of a week. Hot weather seems to affect it too.

Had the same issue a few months back. Found the brake pads stuck in the caliper and not moving freely with the retaining pins bent. Replaced the pins and cleaned the pads so that they move freely within the caliper. No noise since.

 

It is the pins - you have to grease them more often looks like - nothing crazy but checking from time to time is good... seen it in other cars.
One guy told me he got a gun cleaning kit that has a perfect tool to clean the pin and then grease it properly, fits perfect.

Depending on the pads, other noise may be coming from the plate on the back of the pad if it separates from the pad itself during the life of it; make sure you get something that''s good and one more advise: never ever turn/resurface rotors; not a good idea!

 

You can turn rotors once just fine. That sounds like misinformed advice.
