seat belts

Hi I have a 2005 Acura RL question on the seat belts, while driving and before I buckle up the light is on in the dash and I'll hear please fasten your seat belt, but if the passenger doesn't buckle up I get no light and on reminder. Can anyone tell me if this is normal for an RL or should I bring it in for service.

thanks for any help mannix

Welcome aboard!

Car Talk is more of a general area. You'll get more replies (and more relevant answers) from the RL section of the forum. I will move this there for you so you can connect with other RL owners.

I recall someone reporting this before, so I believe it is "normal"

The seatbelt reminder / warning is part of the driver's seat sensors as it tiggers in conjunction with the vehicle being in gear. There are no seatbelt reminder / warning sensors for the front or rear passengers.

It is the operator's responsibility to assure the passengers are wearing seatbelts.

Partially true. ^

The passenger seat belt indicator/minder came around in the '07 model. Your situation is normal for an '05.

Since the OP specified he has a 2005 RL I resourced the 2005 RL Manual. My response to his car was totally true.

The 05 RL is for the American market and the Japanese determined that passengers were only partially stupid while the drivers are completely stupid. I would be willing to suggest that the Legend doesn't have the chime because most of the world considers it an insult to have a mechanical device remind you thousands of times to put your seat belt on.
If you approach an 05 at night and unlock the doors then HID's come on for security but if you open the door, a ding ding ding noise eminates from inside the car to tell you that you have opened the door! Please tell me that the Japanese were just taking the piss, Americans can't be that stupid?

Pretty sure it was a design flaw to have the chime while the lights are on auto and the door is open. It bothers me so much that I don't use auto.

It reminds me of the Top Gear episode where Jeremy Clarkson reviews the Cadillac CTS. *Bong* *Bong* *Bong*

Sadly another byproduct of our American culture too often motivated by litigation, inability to take personal responsibility, need to find blame for personal lack of self control, sense of entitlement and what-can-I-get instead of what-can-I-contribute mentality.

Yep, most western cultures acknowledge this about US consumers.

I am TampaRL, and I approve this message.

So now you only have to suffer through one stupid chime - the seat belt. Paying extra for a car with some of the features that I want should not require that I have to turn them off because some Japanese designer thinks that I am stupid.
I am surprised that more people aren't insulted by this anoying feature and that there isn't a sticky on how to eliminate both chimes.
BTW - I think that the chime is in the instument cluster somewhere but without knowing where exactly I am reluctant to start removing the dash.

Well, and one chime is useful, and that's not turning the key knob all the way off (leaving it in acc) and opening the door. I did that a few times when I first got the car, would have run the battery down if I didn't realize it. We'd be better off figuring out a way to disable not the whole chime, but just the signal running from the headlight switch to the chime, which is probably not very easy if I had to guess, since I'm sure it runs through the computer first. I don't really care about the seat-belt chime, I wear mine from habit anyways and never hear the chime.

BTW:

It doesn't matter how many people are insulted. American Honda, Inc. is going to cover its ass just like every other American manufacturing company. Welcome to the world of endless liability lawsuits.

Also, I would put a decent amount of money on the fact that the car leaves Japan without the dummy warnings, and that they are applied here in the states.

As much as these safety features are useful (in some cases) and are intended to aide the operator, my stance is we are culturing less involved drivers with diminished focus, inability to drive responsibly and opportunity to deflect blame from operator error to feature defect.

The primary reason I find them beneficial is not to protect me from my driving, but from the inordinate amount of 'near misses' I experience on simple everyday commutes.

My wish is to lessen the nanny features and warnings (reducing cost, weight, and scape goat liability) and man up society to REMOVE DANGEROUS DRIVERS from our roads. Poor drivers are already plentiful, but DANGEROUS drivers are now too much the norm. How do I define the two? A poor driver will yield to faster left lane traffic with a lane change, signal and perhaps a nod or wave to acknowledge their attention loss to others. A DANGEROUS driver will flip you off, stomp on the brakes and tailgate you after making a dramatic lane change in the intersection, speeding through a school zone all while flipping you off with one hand and texting with the other.

I believe in accelerating Darwinism....therefore I cannot own a gun.

Now, that is an official rant and hyjack.....otherwise it was simply an expanded discussion around a feature of the car that is only a symptom of a much bigger problem.

Has anyone seen my meds???

Tampa, you almost sound like a Libertarian. You mean it's not someone else's job to do all our thinking for us and protect us from ourselves since we're all a bunch of ?

seatbelt warning is out in the passenger seat 2006 tl

that in no way is connected to the airbag? I was driving my mom around one day when she noticed it! I said hooray hooray but then I got to thinking!

even back then Acura was politically correct. I just usually keen buying buckled behind me I wear a seatbelt half the time!
