Saw an 09+ in the wild today!
Ive never seen an 09+ RL driving around Orlando, (see some 05-08 though) and today I saw one driving towards me. It looks a lot better in motion as I was a little stunned.
A little while after that I went to the dealer for some fluids and they actually had an RL in the showroom! It was an RL day today I guess. Funny thing though cause the showroom RL was locked. SOld maybe, but didnt have any notes etc.

The next RL is rumored to be a hybrid.....but realistically the J37 engine will soldier on as the only engine.

No hope for a new design DI V6 I guess. I had read somewhere that Honda has had issues with DI, I think they tried an i VTEC DI engine in the first Honda Stream, and it never went anywhere. Should have been nice, a 2.0L DOHC K series engine. To me so far, there is nothing like the 2.0L DOHC K20Z3 engine in the Civic Si. What a fun, flexible engine. And no, I have avoided driving an S2000 because then it might be car fever again.

I have only seen a few of 09's in the greater Seattle area since its release. One of the things I noticed is that the grill is half way tolerable when the car is in silver and the other thing was that the ones I did see were owned by elderly people. Maybe when you get older the grill looks ok, loss of sight ?

I was surprised to see one at the dealer here.
I noticed what appeared to be no more gated shifter. That is the only manumatic type mode was the wheel paddles. The shifter just went up & down ...
Or, maybe I was hallucinating. Wish I would have done a double take.

gated shifter gone, paddle shifters are in.

Maybe a good thing. I almost never use the gate and exclusively the paddles. Mostly for going downhill slow.
One thing that ircs me about the RL shifter is how easy it is to go from R(everse) into P(ark)
It seems a simple "bump" without trying will throw it into Park. No real effort is needed, no real "yes, I really mean to go from R to P"
Anyone else notice this?

Easy is from D to N as in holding your hand on the shifter and then a sudden slow down pushes your hand into neutral.

The real advantage to the non gate shifter is the software for the paddles works at all times. You do not have to put the tranny into manumatic mode and use the + or - as with the gated shifter. With the straight gate, you are in auto, and you want to go down a gear, just tap the paddle, and the car assumes you are in manual mode. The transmission control system
monitors the accelerator pedal use and your driving conditions. When you press the accelerator pedal as in normal driving, the system judges that you are driving at a constant cruising speed without using the paddle shifters. Under these conditions, D-paddle shift mode is canceled, and the transmission
automatically returns to drive mode (D).
You also have the S (Sequential Shift) mode in the straight gate, which I believe is supposed to change the shift points, and holds the gears longer, and limits selection to gears 1-4. It works similarly to the manumatic mode in the gated shifter, so is always in paddle shift mode, until you shift back to D. You can also tell because in S mode, the letter M appears in front of the gear number. The S mode is different than D3 mode in the gated shifter. I would say there is no equivalent of the D3 mode in the gated style shifter.
I think I have explained this badly, and 037 can chime in here.
Acura introduced the straight gate logic and style with the 2007 RDX tranny in late 2006.
Remember, back in 2004 when they finalized the RL, they still used the gated style shifter as in the 3G TL, below.

I must say that over the past 2 days, I saw 4 2G RL's on the road (1 yesterday & 3 today) after maybe seeing like one per month. It was quite a refreshing site actually that maybe others are starting to realize what we do when it comes to this car.
On a separate note, I do see 1G RL's on a fairly regular basis though..

I use the paddle shifter for quick pre-downshifts, say for passing or darting around. The two step process really takes almost all advantage out of it. It seems like it takes the same or less time to just kick down the gas and wait the few beats for the tranny to downshift.

A guy down the street from my has a black one. The beak looks hideous to me but in silver it's less noticeable.
I much prefer the simple look of the 05-08's. The 09's are supposed to have a bigger back seat though... that would be nice because it's tight back there.
