RL totaled, RIP
2006 RL with 135K miles on it, was in great shape. A tree fell on it during a storm, luckily it was overnight and no one was in or near it. They had trouble reading the odometer, roof caved in completely as it was that bad. Of course Insurance paid pre-covid price value and I had to replace it with a TL post-Covid price premium. One of the reasons the insurance company gave me was that the carpet and seat were not in a great shape. I had to laugh and point to them that they did realize a tree that weighed 20 tons fell on this car while there was a tornado in the area and a few inches of rain, right? Anyway, what's done is done. Thanks to members who helped me over the years with this car. I couldn't find an RL replacement in time but staying in the Acura family with a nice TL.

You can negotiate with insurance companies, though it sounds a little too late now.
Never let them take it.
I presume you could have kept the car and a slightly smaller check. If this ever happens to you RL owners out there, keep the car. Part it out. At least part out some of the most expensive parts. The carbon fiber drive shaft, for example. You can probably get $2000 for it.
Not much time to deal with selling parts, not for me. This option was not available to me anyway and I preferred to take cash. I got offered $6K and negotiated $6150, max, take it or leave it offer and I just wanted to get it done vs arguing back and forth. It's reasonable enough for a car that age I guess so let me not bad mouth them. If I traded it in, I doubt I would have gotten that price so good enough.
I went for a 2008 Acura TL, regular sedan, posted an article on it in that section as to my experience. Used cars, especially good cars are hard to find these days. There were two RLs I saw and each were being sold through what I would call lower tier dealers. One needed new gaskets (engine and transmission) which could have added some prohibitive costs and the other needed new AC compressor (perhaps more) but the interior was filthy with missing knobs and burnt seats down to the foam, body panels that had to be in multiple accidents. It's too bad because to me it shows a total disregard and I doubt these people even replaced the timing belts or basic service which (without records), I would have had to assume were never done. The 2008 TL on the other hand was clean, single owner, bought, serviced and traded into the same Acura dealer after 13 years! So, I feel good about my decision.
