Why is everyone so hesitant about drilling into the trunk? I had a spoiler on my '01 TL that was installed that way. In over 5 years of ownership, not one issue. No leaks and definitely no rust. That's even less of an issue with the RL since the trunk lid is made of aluminum.

Yep, I drilled the trunk to install a spoiler on my $17,000 Honda Gold Wing a few years ago. I know ... not the same thing ... but it seemed like as big a deal when I did it!

I'd drill my RL's trunk if I had the spoiler (which I may break down and buy soon).

I think it's just the feeling of putting something permanent on there. Many people including me may want to sell the car later on and if the new buyer doesn't like the look of it with the deck lid, then I guess there's always the option of taking it off...

Plus, it's easier to just tape rather than measure and drill =P

I just called the dealer for the price of deck lid and installation.
Deck lid =$585.00
Installation=$100.00

I will order part on line for less than $300.00 and have the dealer install for $100.00. I will save $285.00.

Will your dealer still honor the $100 installation fee if you bring in your own part? Many of them "hide" part of the installation (or extra profit) in the price of the part.

I have called to the service dept. and asked for installation only.
I will confirm with the dealer when my part arrives. (paid $297.00 Plus $3.75 handling free shipping)
I was thinking do it myself .(Hopefully, I don't screw up my trunk when I drill the mounting holes).

Note:
Someone here has mentioned the labor was 1/2 hour or $45.00

I didn't want to drill holes becuase of the posibility of screwing something up, scratching, or not having the holes aligned right. Why do something the difficult way when there is an easier and much better way like using the 3M tape? I would be willing to bet anyone, and I think everyone who has used the the 3M tape can agree, that it would be easier to rip off a spoiler that was installed by drilling holoes and using the small bolts the dealership uses as compared to trying to remove a spoiler installed with my methed. The gap that is mentioned is there on everyones spoiler no matter how they installed it. The spoiler comes from the factory with double sided tape along the edge to prevent the spoiler from vibrating and rubing against the paint. This is needed because the entirity of the spoiler is not secured down except for the two mounting points of the bolts where the entire spoiler is secured when using the tape and there for no vibration. There is a rescessed area along the underside of the spoiler that you put the 3M tape. If everyone would remove the trunk lining and look where they would have to drill these holes I think everone would agree that it is not worth the risk and difficulty. I drilled through the trunk of my CL to mount the OEM spoiler on it with no problems, but that was a completely different type of spoiler. The RL's spoiler just lays flat on the trunk lid and does not weigh anything so bolts are not necessary.

Un-like what AsianTL expresses above, if you use the tape, you don't have to worry about screwing anything up and you save yourself a bit of cash to boot!

I left the original struts on, figure if it becomes a problem I will then install. The spoiler weights so little I dont think it will be a factor. But is nice that they give you the struts. If you look at the picture I posted with the red 2 sided tape. You will see on every outer edge ACURA already had something there either it be a piece of double sided tape or weather stripping. So the tape that I put on was only inside their items.

You are correct the picture I posted was just with it sitting on the trunk. I will post a picure at my website with it installed it is tight no gap.

Hey guys,

New to these forums, just purchased a 2005 RL a couple weeks ago. I found this thread on the spoiler just before I was about to shell out $550 w/tax to my dealership to put the spoiler on. I ordered it online, arrived yesterday, used the double sticky tape method and it's on there tight and flush and looks GREAT! $307 total including the tape. Thanks for the advice!

I did order the deck lid spoiler ($301) from Acurahondaworld and Wood steering wheel, Wood knob ($470.00) from Kendall acura honda.
I will have dealer install the steering wheel only and do the rest myself.

AsianTL, I hate to cut you off at the pass, but the steering wheel is even easier to install than the spoiler! Took me about 10 minutes and not a single second of frustration. Easier than the wood shift knob IMHO! Just spend the $15 for a steering wheel puller and presto, your finished with the install quicker than it would probably take you to drive to the dealership!

can anyone post a picture of the exact tape packaging that one should use for this job? I went to homedepot but couldn't find the "red backing" super heavy duty tape. Thanks.

Really expensive
Has a red plastic backing that you peal off

I used up 2 rolls of 3M interior/exterior tape which I picked up at Home depot.
It Held up really good and no gap.
Just got the wood shift knob done by myself and wood steering wheel installed by dealer for $113.25 tax included. They look really good and I would recommend them to anyone.
A-spec under body kit just arrived home and will be installed by dealer the end the month for $394.00 before tax.
