Remote Starter for RL

I remember past threads where some people ran into issues getting a remote starter installed due to the complexity of the RL electronics. Today I got an email from my Acura dealer about a Remote Starter giveaway. If you bring your car in by a certain date and enter to win.......etc. I am bringing my car in next week to have the brake recall work done and plan on checking out the remote starter.

Looking for feedback from anyone who has had a remote starter installed. Any problems from the installation, recommend it or not? Thanks

From my understanding...the OEM Acura remote starter kit only works on '09+ RLs and not '05-'08. I would love to get one on mine if its possible.

I know of no one here who has had a successful remote start install on the 2005-08 RLs. I think one person had it installed, only to have it uninstalled because of significant issues.

Brought my car in today for the brake recall service and asked about the remote starter. It does not apply to the RL (at least my model year). The rep gave me two contacts who install the remote starters which led me to ask if he knew of any RL owners who had one installed, and his reply was "no". Not really a big deal to me so I won't pursue it any longer.

For a loaner they gave me a ZDX. I can't get past the look of this vehicle but was impressed with the ride. Very comfortable front seats. The push-button start and stop was different but not that impressive. The all black darth vader console looked a bit cheap to me although user friendly and well placed controls. The blinker makes an annoying clacking sound that is just a bit too loud for my taste. All in all a nice vehicle but with the rising gas prices and the $50K+ price tag, I don't think this vehicle will be a big seller.

Thumbs up Viper 5901 at Best Buy

The local BB store has this in stock and is scheduling the installation approximately 2 weeks out. They will install a bypass module so that they do not need to "hide" an extra key chip from Acura somewhere in the car. I sure hope that it works as we are in the deep cold/snow of a Minnesota winter right now! (This is the first winter that I have owned the car.) The starter retails at $499.99 at BB. However, you can order one online for around $220 to $250. At least one BB customer in Houston TX went this route and saved a chunk of change.

I've had my remote starter since October in my 07 RL and it works flawlessly. There is a emulation box that'll emulate your key's signal, so you won't lose a key. The only issue I'm having with mine is the trunk trigger randomly goes off from time to time, but I'm sure the installer can take care of it easily. I've always had Viper remotes and this is the one I have (others will also work in your RL):

I chose this by choice, but I'm sure the less expensive units will also work.

Do you remember how much it cost for parts/installation?

Thanks for the info, you're the first one I've heard that has had a successful installation. Now I will pursue this again, if not this winter definitely before next winter.

Please keep informed if you have the installation. I'm still sketchy on who I'd have do the installation. If you have no problems that will be a big confidence boost. Good luck!

I got a Compustar and a Drone module that has an app on my iPhone. The range is 5000 feet with just the compustar one button remote and the drone allows me to start from out of state. It utilizes gps and Internet access. I pay a $50 annual fee cuz drone has a tracking feature and other stuff. I can recommend a shop if ur in the Philly area

do not mess..

up your rl. remote start will not work on a 2005-08 rl without some problems being caused down the line. Why people keep this going i do not know. unless ACURA has a tested oem remote unit do not let some cut wires in your RL!!

for the people with autostart,
do you need both keys to clone the code?
does your rl shut off once the door is open?
thanks in advance.

You need both keys for my set up, cuz u can still use the door handle sensors to unlock the doors. Only shuts off if u get in and step on the brake pedal before turning on ignition knob. Mine is set to auto start fir 15 min and shut off on it's own in case it was activated by accident.

Why do you think that? Remote starters are nothing more than a receiver (transceiver if you have a two way), that starts the engine. Granted it's a different vehicle and technology, but my 02 TL-S with Nav had a starter for over 8 years and never had any issues.

I've had this Viper two way for about 3 months now, and it's worked flawlessly... aside from a random "trunk trigger" false alarm, which I'm going to bring back to the shop to have it fixed.

Have a 09 and dealer said remote starter is not available thru Acura. Now I'm getting a 2011 in a week, and he's saying there's still no remote starter kit. Does anyone here have an OEM kit on a 2009/10/11? Love the car.

Lots of dealers deal w stereo shops that do starters. I know cuz i have family in the business dealing w 3 diff dealers. I haven't had problems. Plus remote start companies do their own research and testing.

You do need both keys to program the box. You can open the door without the remote by pulling the handle, and it does not stop the car. However, you can not turn the ignition key without on of the two key fobs present.

I opted for a security system as well, since there's no vibration sensor in the OEM setup. I also wanted a two-way and installed a tilt sensor. We all know the wheel locks are a theft deterrent device, kind of like an ADT sticker on your front door at the house, and it doesn't prevent theft. The tilt sensor will set off my alarm, when it detects the car is off plane, and send me an alart on the remote.
