Remote Buttons Wearing Off

I am trying to figure out why the silver finish on my remote buttons on the Driver 1 keyfob for my 06 RL are wearing off when I actually almost NEVER press them...the keyfob is always just in my pocket and I use the touch to lock/unlock capabilities on the doors and trunk. I'd bet I have pressed the keyfob buttons less than 10 times total ever since buying the car.

When I bought the car a year and a half ago both keyfob remotes (Driver 1 and Driver 2) looked mint, and now Driver 1 is worn to the point where you can't really make out the door lock versus unlock logos and the buttons are basically just black. Is the silver on the buttons that delicate?

Silver is totally gone. It's all that wear up against other items in pocket.

Hardly ever use mine and the buttons are pretty worn as well. Shame they don't make the buttons out of silver plastic.

I'm having the same problem. As a temporary fix, I used a toothpick and filled in the symbols with white touch up paint. Surprising issue..considering the overall QC on the RL.

I ended up switching the buttons from the #2 fob. It now looks like crap but mine (#1) looks great.

My memory buttons are shedding the plastic coating and they are never used. Black paint is fading in areas and the strips between the roof and the doors are awful.

But Acura doesn't make replacement parts... they sell parts at such a ridiculous prices that they trick you into selling.

Basically if you have a tranny, nav, and AC go out, a 2005-2006 RL is worthless/totaled.

can you just buy new buttons??

when I replaced my battery I took my remote apart and noted that those buttons are separate little pieces.... no reason why you shouldn't be able to replace the buttons..

are they NOT sold separately???

If your NAVI takes a dump, just get a Garmin and use a suction cup to mount it to the factory screen. Seen it a bunch of times.

Nope, I've had quite a few people ask the same question.

Why not repaint them yourself? The buttons pop right out.

repainting the whole button would be easy.. but it would be a tad trickier getting the black detail inside the little "icons" for each button... aside from getting a very very tiny paintbrush from a hobby shop... how would you get the paint nicely inside the icon..

as an alternative, one could just paint it one solid color.. and forget the icon things being a different color/contrasted.... at least it wouldn't look like stuff chipping off....

i agree with what was said above.. on a car like an RL you would think the remote buttons woudl have been more durable.. and if they are this prone to paint flaking off, Acura shoudl make them available as a separate item to purchase.

Hopefully a MUCH simpler solution

1. Seek out rub on numbers/letters like Letraset. A Sheet is less than $5 and available from most office supply stores or go on line. Then get a small sheet of clear adhesive plastic. Pick out your numbers and transfer them to the fob, and cover the new letters with the clear plastic and using an exacto knife cut to the shape of the buttons. Viola.

Or
2. if you are really adventurous, go to a sign shop and ask them to make a couple number sets in the color and font you want. They will also have the clear plastic to cover the numbers.

I took mine out and sprayed them with about 10 very light coats over about 4 hours. I used Krylon plastic silver and then used the clear in the same way. The icons are covered but they look alot better and I think I protected them pretty well with the clear. Time will tell.

racerrl - can you post any pics of your keyfob?? i'd like to see how it looks with the buttons 100% silver. I figured if I ever redid my buttons this how I woudl do it.... trying to get black inside the little nooks and crannies of the buttons would be very hard.... well.. it would be easy to get it in there.. ut to make it look professional / perfect would be VERY hard... so I figure just spraying the whole thing silver would look ok.. the little "icons" / indentations with the various symbols might still be visible.... asl ong as the paint didn't clump in there and look weird...

my parents have an 07 RL... adn both their keys look 100% fine. my car is an 06. My key is very worn. my wife's key, the "spare" looks mint..although she keeps it in her purse in a little pocket so it gets very little use/abuse.. vs my key which is in my pocket.. banging on toher stuff....

Acura shoudl just sell the buttons. problem woudl be solved.

i imagine you can buy a whole new key fob.. but that must be a pricey item.

Had this same problem. Started using my #2 key.
Also the plastic coating on the buttons for the steering wheel was peeling off so I scratched it all off and it looks 100% better.

I took a simpler approach, I noticed that the worn area had a nice shine so I opened the key fob and cleaned off the remainder of the silver paint. The icons are still visible in the center and the gloss black buttons stand out against the matte finish of the key fob body.

really? You all care that much about what your FOB looks like ;-) That's a bit OCD in my book. Whoever looks at your FOB and sees worn buttons and thinks your a SLOB is right up there with your issues in my mind. just my opinion.

sorry for trivial thinking, but if the post doesn't interest you just ignore it.

I dont think it is as much of caring what other people perceive it as more than it is an attention to detail. Some people may not care if all of their valve stem caps match or even if they are all there, but I do. You may say that people who think about the minute details are overly concerned and need to relax, but some of us can take in the important things in life and still have time to appreciate the less important ones.
