Real gas mileage at real speeds?
Real gas mileage at real speeds?
What gas mileage is everyone getting? According to my 05 RL with 30K on it I am getting between 17 and 18 MPG on my way to work which is about 90 % highway traveling around 75 to 80 MPH. This seems really low in my opinion? I am driving the car normally.
I'd say it is pretty low.. I've only seen like 17 mpg on mine, for the lowest, and that's basically all city driving.. Leaving the car idling at times, too... I have to really drive like a madman to get a low mpg, but if the MID is telling you 17 and 18 mpg for mostly highway then definite Acura service call!
During my last summer vacation, doing 95% highway driving, I was able to get 28.37 MPG (8.29 litres/100km) at about 75 MPH. My 5 months average last fall was 18 MPG though (13 L/100) as it was probably 90% city driving. I have not checked it lately but it is likely pretty scary as we get harsh winters in my area. That may not be a concern to you depending on where you live...
Should I get my car checked? has bout 4500 miles on it. Don't take 12mpg too seriously just yet, I have been having periods of heavy feet. Just jumped over from 06 TL and enjoying the extra go power.
As far as cruise control speed...it was on CMBS so it occasionally slowed for people cutting in and accelerated when they moved, so it's not the best the car has.
Compared to TL, the mileage is horrible! TL gave me 30mpg on cruise no questions asked.

Reset your mpg and drive around town at normal speeds. Run a couple errands and drive normal, not necessarily slow, but yknow like 35 mph or so between lights. I can't see the 09 RL being THAT much of a dramatic change in mpg from my RL. The highway mpg is 22 instead of 24, so there's a little change, pretty good change actually, but the city is still the same.. 16 mpg. I could POSSIBLY see you gettin 15 or 14 at worst, but 12 is not right.. Unless you're darting in and out of lanes, flooring it, and smashing on the brakes all the time.
Actually, I don't dart very much. New York City traffic lights are not very far apart, so it's similar to you guys being stuck in traffic, all the time!
I'm feeding it 93 grade gas...this is usually with only 1 person in the car, so total weight is never over 4300lb. What a porker...

I average 19-21 mpg with spirited driving 80-85 mph on 9 miles of interstate on my 13 mile trip to work on my 2007 RL. The other 4 miles are around 35mph with several stop lights. On highway driving and trips I have easily averaged 28 mpg including using the A/C.
You may want to try different gas companies, and use 3-4 tanks before deciding that its not the gas brand that you are using. I found with previous cars that the certain gas companies, ex/ Go-mart gasoline, was horrible for mpg. It dropped from 19 mpg to 12 mpg and took 3 tanks of my regular gas company before I got back to 19 mpg.
Of course winter gas has those extra additives and they don't help much for extra mileage. The only mods I have done to my RL is added Mobil-1 after first oil change and that does seem to add about 1-2 mpg.

I've never driven my 2005 RL in "nice" weather. The day I bought it, we were having our first 'nor easter .. Not even sure what it looks like clean!
Been seeing roughly 17mpg, not much highway, lots of traffic. When I did get a chance to go over 60mpg, I was getting around 22mpg.
I've probably avg. about 20 MPH since December 24th, 2008.

the lowest i usually get is about 14.5 to 15 but thats when i am really enjoy my car and speeding off from stop. usually when i'm just cruising i get 16+ and about 22 highway when i am cruising at highway speeds and about 20 when i am up at about 80+. On a trip back from NY doing mostly 90 i was a little under 20. Maybe its time to get a new air filter or check ur tires or oil change.
There's something different about the winter fuel blends this year. Last winter, I was getting 17 mpg in mixed driving, 60 % city, 40% highway. This winter, I'm down to 15.8-16 mpg. Pure freeway trips are still around 23 mpg.
I think part of it may be that I need to clean the filter on my AEM CAI. It's been on for nearly 30k miles at this point and it needs cleaned. I'm just awaiting a nice warm spring day and some help to get it done--it's buried so far down that it is unreachable without removing the bumper and/or a lot of stuff in the engine compartment.

We'll see. I've not done this before. I think I'm the first to drive this car with a CAI for enough miles to require cleaning of the filter, so I'll let you know. I would think that removing the plastic under the car would be easier than removing the bumper, but it's too cold for me to go out and try it.
I usually use Exxon, or BP if available. Its really funny though how you can switch one station of Exxon to another station of Exxon and get differences in gas mileage. I agree the gas this winter is worse than last year. Maybe they are stripping the btu's out of it like the natural gas companies do. Can't hardly boil water anymore on the stove anymore, takes forever to get it hot enough to boil.
Its a hit and miss.

i get about the same to about 15 mpg in the city also and about 20-22 mpg on the Northern state on my 30 mile commute to work each way.
I also got about ~475 miles per tank when i had the oem 17's and now with the a-specs and winter tires i average about ~400 miles/tank. also with the 17's i was averaging about 26-27 mpg on the hwy.

I think there's a big difference between average MPG and "cruising MPG". I average 18-22mpg on a tank, but I regularly cruise about 8 miles of my commute at 80mph, getting 24-26mpg the whole run (both ways). If I dial it back to 70, I get 30mpg for that section.
Now, I get down in a valley and have to climb out and it's 10mpg.
In regard to the AEM CAI, you do need to remove the bumper to install it, but you can remove the filter without doing so. You'll still have to remove the entire fender liner, however.

I have been using Exxon gas (93 of course) I will try switching brands. Running new tires Toyo Versado LX which are very nice all season tires by the way (I have had them out in 2 snow storms now and it is night and day compared to the OEM tires). And I ordered a K&N drop in air filter last night. I will see if this helps at all. In any case this thread is a good reference for everyone regarding real gas mileage with the RL.
Don't forget that the cars computer is telling it to maintain a specific fuel/air ratio no matter what. when its colder out, air becomes denser, and requires more fuel to maintain the same ratio than it would in the summer.
I have an 05 rl w/50k miles on it. I average about 21-22 in suburban driving, but will average just over 30 mpg on full highway, traveling 70-75 mph. I definitely get better gas mileage in the summer, averaging closer to 24-25 in suburban driving. I have a k&N air filter.
This might seem obvious, but one of the driving methods in suburban driving is to get the car into 5th gear at around 45 mph, at that point the rpms will drop to about 1500 and the car won't go back into 4th until 37-38 mph. In 40 mph zones, I will push the car to 45, get it into 5th and then back off and cruise in 5th at around 40 mph. If you are going about 45 mph and the car is still in 4th gear, you'll get much less gas mileage.
This car does much better on gas in 5th gear than any other gear.

I place a lot of miles on the car daily-up to 250, so I can get a pretty good gauge on mods. Stock I was getting around 19.6-20mpg with a lead foot from time to time and a average speed of 70-75mph.
With underdrive pulley, Pulstar plugs, and synthetic oil, I am up to 21.5-22mpg with the same driving style. Still testing it out with the throttle spacer.

When I replace OEM tires & wheels with A-Spec wheels and summer tires will I get better mpg? What about adding A-Spec suspension? Maybe you could answer this one Bob? Is it just simply if the new wheels and tires weigh less than the previous tire/wheel combo? I'm thinkin lower suspension would help slighty, but not very much, with making the car cut through the wind better... And one more thing... What cars would be just as good as the RL (yknow lux, comfort, awd, tech) if not better with MPG? I can probably do some research on this, but just thought I'd throw it out there... I know the Lexus LS460 prob would be a little better than the RL in mpg with it's 8 speed and whatnot....
Combined milage for me is around 20mpg. 15 city 24 hwy. I usually cruise 75-80. I drive short trips 4 times a week and one long trip (110 miles round). The MDX gets around 17MPG combined on the highway its 21 in the city its around 14.
My driving is probably about 80/20 highway/city and I consistently get between 21-23 mpg. That's with speed limits of 70-80mph in SE Michigan.
I normally use BP and Mobil (always premium).

The A-Spec wheels are no lighter than stock IIRC.
