rattling / ticking noise at higher rpms
lately i noticed that when I rev my rl up near redline, there is a sound coming from the engine bay area... it sounds like soemthing rattling or that is loose....
it almost soundds like a can full of rice grains that are jingling around in the can..... the sound increases in frequency the faster the engine spins..and I only notice it at high rpm...you don't hear anything at 3k or 4k..it''s not unitl the engine winds up to about 5500 or 6000rpm and then goes toward redline...
i only hear it at very high rpm.... it is not there all the time, but it is there much of the time. if I have it in manual mode and rev it up near redline, i hear it in 1st and second gear a lot.. as I get to about 6000-7000 rpm...
mind you, I rarely drive the car this fast, but I have recentlynoticed this... at first i wondered if someething was loose int eh glove box or in teh engine bay.. i've tried driving the c ar with a/c on or off but that makes no differnece...
is this a valve problem?
i was going to take it in to let my dealer look at it, but wanted to get a general consensus as to what it might be before I took it to them..thanks.

I believe I might have the same issue as you since around 5000+ RPM's I hear what seems like a ssshhhhhHHHHH (or like a bunch or rice in a can) noise coming from the engine bay. My car is currently at the dealer for that and the "D" light intermittently flashing I'm pretty sure they are not related though so no worries for you at least. Ill let you know what they say when the advisor calls me this evening.

Talked to my service advisor and they are trying to figure out the trans issue first but nothing is comming up in the computer so they are going to talk to the "tech line" to see if they have any ideas...
After thats done then they will troubleshoot the noise and ill let you know. The service advisor said it would probably be tuesday when they have more info. So for the time being I guess ill continue to enjoy the TSX v6 they gave me lol.

Its definatly NOT the rev limiter... That causes the engine RPMs to bounce just after the redline starts. I used to bounce off the limiter a lot back when I had a 17PSI turbo system on my 280whp Civic and that never caused any problems (built engine though).
This is a sound and nothing is felt. it almost sounds like a bearing on the alternator or p/s pump is going out. I already changed my t-belt, water pump and both the tensioner and idler pullies so I know its not that.

not for me... I just had 2 of them replaced and the others where good. It's been making the same sound for at least 6 months but it hasnt got any worse so I wasnt really that worried about it. Although I would like it fixed.

I actually had to pick up my car so I could take it to get the new ATLP J-pipe test fitted. The dealer still was not able to find the problem. I think they are mostly concerned with the transmission first. I will be dropping the car back off at the dealer once ATLP finishes their work. They did put about 60 miles on it test driving it but they couldn't pinpoint the location of the noise since you cant make it happen when the car is parked. They said the alternator and p/s pump seem good and since the t-belt is done they said there isnt much else it could be but they want to keep looking.

Car was in for B1 service and I had them look into this noise. they were able to duplicate it and said they replaced a heat shield and the noise is gone. I pick it up later today and will confirm...but it sounds like this was the problem.
for any of you who note this noise - sounds like an easy fix.

I don't know - mine was fixed under warranty, so it just says "n/c" for "no charge" on my invoice... I could dig up the part numbers if youw ant them...
i took the car out for a spin today, had it in sport mode, and revved the stink out of it - in first and second. noise is GONE.
they fixed it.

I just wanted to follow up with those that might have a noise like this one. I replaced the heat shield myself this weekend and drove 140 miles since. I have not heard a peep so this was the fix for my car as well. If anyone else is planning to DIY the TSB for this remember you have to drop the J-Pipe then the transfer case so plan at least an hour to get it done.
