Quirky radar detector?

My BEL 980 sounds off a laser alert when I take it and hold it over the passenger side cup holder. Has anyone else had this experience? I've moved it away and it stops, but when I move it back to the area it resumes chirping laser.

Your comment reminds meof the guy who goes to the doctor and says, "doc, it hurts when I do this".

THe doc says, "well don't do that".

Don't hold you radar detector over your cup holder. It works better on your windshield.

I'm being a smart a$$.

My detector (Passport Solo) emits a laser warning when I'm using my Blackberry sometimes.

In my ody the escorts have the tendency to give a laser warning when accelerating briskly from a stop. I think that is has to do with the momentary voltage change when you accelerate. It has happened with my 2 escorts and on 3 different odys. My integrated Bel on my RL does not have the problem, neither have my past escorts on my TL's.

Had the same laser warning when I take my Bel RX65 off its holder and fiddle with it near the center stack console area. Don't know if it is the LCD from the display screen or whether it is something else ?? Could the blueish night lights trigger a laser warning on our detectors ?

That was what I had suspected but it is not my case, since there are two blue LEDs overhead in the front and my detector only chirps on the right side.

Another strange discovery: My BEL RX65 sometimes goes into self calibration mode and sometimes into "service required" warning mode when I place it over the front speaker on the dash. Then I used the RX 65 in a rental car I used for 3 days - no failures at all. Now I'm attaching it to the right of the dash speaker and it has not failed in 2 days. Maybe my dash speaker was causing some kind of interference which messed up the Bel RX65 ?

I have my Escort X50 mounted on my windshield to the right of my rear view mirror... I have the same problem.. the detector goes into Self Calibration mode and displays service required... Strange.. This did not happen in my TL and I had the detector mounted in the same location...

I'm not sure that I believe this. Technically speaking, LCD displays don't emit anything, but instead filter light that is coming from an external source (that may be built into the display's packaging).

There are many types of light sources used for this, and I don't know what Acura uses, but I seriously doubt that they universally put out enough IR to set off a laser detector.
