Questions about the RL

Hey all,

I've been a lurker on here for quite sometime now. I had an 04 TL with the nav package and thinking of upgrading to the RL.

Since its a totally different and rare car here in Toronto, I need a couple of questions answered.

1) Does the 05 RL have the headlights that swivel when turning?

2) If I put 19" or 20" rims on the car, will it affect the AWD system negatively?

Thanks for taking the time to look.

3 more sorry.

3) A salesman told me the ASpec is nothing but a kit but with my past experience with the A Spec TL's there should be a suspension upgrade also. Is this true with the RL also?

4) Has anyone driven these in the snow? How do they handle?

5) Are you overall pleased by purchasing this vehicle?

HEY lurker... I thought I felt somebody watching....

1) yes, wicked awesome, and i like to turn my wheel sometimes to swivel the light in somebodys face in the other lane or what have you
2) good question.. i'd say no, but not positive
3) salesman is a dumbass. not sure if canada is different, but here we get 18" wheels, bodykit, .75" drop in suspension, decklid spoiler, and uh, think that covers it, oh and a neat little badge that says "A-Spec"
4) masterfully well in the snow, and so much fun.. never will own a FWD vehicle again
5) More than pleased. What do you call it when you cannot wait to take your next drive? I actually have dreams about my car... no joke. Last night somebody painted my car white

YES all 2005 and 2006 have AFS, after that 2007 forward base models do not have the AFS system, only technology packages and CMBS packages do

2) If I put 19" or 20" rims on the car, will it affect the AWD system negatively?
If you maintain stock rolling diameter and keep the weight reasonable, or go lighter, you should be fine. If you lighten the wheels tires overall, it should be better, more responsive. You may have some ride degradation with lower profile tires, and will have to watch potholes, etc. You may be happier with 18's, unless you choose to run the stock 17's with snows and then get the big boys for the summer. Again, pay attention to overall weight of the package. The larger the wheel, the more the chance that you will have to with forged wheels for lighter weight, and that is big bucks, or loonies (is that what they call them?)

3) A salesman told me the ASpec is nothing but a kit but with my past experience with the A Spec TL's there should be a suspension upgrade also. Is this true with the RL also?
A-Spec is an appearance kt and a suspension upgrade. They may be bought and installed independently of each other. In fact all the body pieces may be installed independently of each other also.

4) Has anyone driven these in the snow? How do they handle?
I have driven in light snow, and IMHO the car handles well, but is limited (as any car) by the type of tires. People also have to remember that AWD gets up and goes faster, but braking ability is really not that different from a 2 wheel drive car. The SH-AWD can be helpful in turning situations. The VSC is really quite good. I see you live in Canada, so I cannot claim Virginia snow to be anything like what you have!
5) Are you overall pleased by purchasing this vehicle?
Best car I have ever purchased

Thanks for taking the time to look.

^^^^

Chas has the same answers I would have given. I would add that with decent A/S tires, the car handles fine in snow. Depending on how much snow you get and how long it snows, you may need snow tires, which in addition to the SH-AWD make the car unstoppable.

Welcome, lurker!

Ask him what the function of that button on the left side of instrument cluster is for. It is labeled "AFS Off"

I think that same sales person would give you a better deal if he's unaware of half the features in the car...DON'T EDUCATE HIM!

Thanks guys, you all been really helpful. I was browsing the picture forum and after seeing the pics in there has convinced me even more to get an RL. There is a white one I see in there looks absolutely gorgeous. He has a youtube clip also.

Visionary Racing goes by Touge on this forum. Alas, after modding up his RL to the gills, he moved on to another project and sold that RL. What a beautiful car!
