Question on driver headlight

So I took my RL to a local Acura dealer this morning to get my driver headlight inspected. With my ACC package, I expect both (driver/passenger) headlights to turn so I tested it while sitting in the garage facing a wall. When I turned my steering wheel to right, I noticed my passenger headlight turning but driver won't do anything. Then I turn left which my passenger headlight turned but driver stood still. Thought this wasn't normal.

Also when I start the car, I see passenger headlight turning itself (sorta like 360 degree turn) to warm-up(??) but my driver side sits still.

After looking at it for about an hr, dealer came back and said all is normal.

Does this sound right?

Doesn't sound right to me because I notice both lights "warming up" when I start the car. They also both move with the direction of my steering. Possibly a bad motor?

Response I got from this dealer was that....

Driver headlight wouldn't turn during 'warm-up' b/c it's not out of alignment. Only passenger one would do it and it would eventually stop if it's aligned correct.

How do you actually confirm that both headlights are moving with the direction of my steering? unless you are at a complete stop. I tried doing it at stop but on manual it says, driver side is NOT supposed to move so you are not confusing the on-coming traffic. Did you see that?

i'm thinking about taking it to another dealer for a second opinion.

Try a second opinion, but I swear both my lights move as I turn. I have an MDX that doesn't have the adaptive lighting and it is very noticeable. I could be wrong, but it doesn't sound right to me.

The drivers side headlight won't turn from a standstill. Safety feature in that the car assumes that you are at an intersection. Turning of the light would blind oncoming traffic. Try while the car is in motion and the you will see the drivers side light swivel to the left.

easiest test is to go bout 10mph and make a hard left turn. If both lights don't go left then there's a problem. Otherwise I believe left doesn't move left under 5mph, should move right w/ the steering wheel at any speed.

Ur dealer is full of BS... only one side moves at start up and IIRC they only move if the car is rolling.

And I'll spare Chas the post:

oncoming traffic.

This same behavior is exhibited when the car starts up and the AFS initializes. The right light will swivel right. The left light will not so that oncoming traffic will not be blinded, assuming the car is parked on the street.

The real test is to be driving more than 10 mph and making a sharp left turn, and seeing if the left light swivels with the turn. If it does not turn, then you likely have an issue. But if the AFS warning light is not on, your system is probably working.

Let us know what happens.

my understanding is the right and left both will swivel right but the left will not swivel left to prevent blinding someone coming the other way. I can see that behavior when I turn left into my driveway. Both will go right but the left will stop moving left once it is straight ahead.

Not sure that that is correct. Only one light swivels, the right in right hand turns and the left in left hand turns. The stationary light helps to provide vision ahead while the swiveling light illuminates the turn (akin to the old cornering lamps).

I'm not sure the above is correct, I think both light swivel in the same direction with enough speed.

This link from the Acura website describes the AFS operation.

Treblig is correct "Only one light swivels, the right in right hand turns and the left in left hand turns. The stationary light helps to provide vision ahead while the swiveling light illuminates the turn (akin to the old cornering lamps)."

Tested it. Yes, both headlights are turning. yes!!

however when lights are on, there is a dip between driver and passenger lights. Is this normal? basically it seems passenger light covers higher ground than driver side. Not by much but a little...

that is normal, passenger light should cover more distance. Driver is supposed to not blind other people.
