PotholeGate Update

Hey guys, got a call from the dealer saying that rim was bent but tire was fine (never heard of that being the case but others have).. I have the OEM 17's but in chrome (car came that way). The dealer said they have to order OEM's but they don't apply the chrome finish and quoted $750 or so. They will give me back the car with the donut still on & I will find a way to get this wheel taken care of. They did patch the potholes a day or so after I hit them and I have a record of it so that should hopefully help my chances of getting reimbursed by the town/county..

Has anyone had a similar ordeal?

Is there a way to fix this rim without getting it replaced? If not, is there a cheaper way or cheaper dealer that sells the OEM rims?

Is it possible to get them in chrome or does the dealer have to do this?

Is this covered under any type of warranty?

Thanks again for the help everyone!

-Good luck with that. Many have tried. Few have succeeded. Not saying you shouldn't try. Just saying it's gonna be a long drawn out process.

Has anyone had a similar ordeal?

-We deal with these issues on a daily basis at work. It is not at all uncommon.

-The rim can be fixed easily if it is a bend on the backside. If it is bent on the face of the wheel or from the bore it will be harder and sometimes not possible. Check with some of your local wheel/tire shops for estimates. There's also a good place online that does it but you'll have to have the car down for longer and pay shipping both ways. www.awrswheelrepair.com

Is it possible to get them in chrome or does the dealer have to do this?

-I've seen places online selling them in chrome. They're probably originally silver and refurbished in chrome.

Is this covered under any type of warranty?

-Not going to be covered under warranty. Your insurance would cover but it's probably not worth it once you factor in your deductible.
Hope this helps.

Thanks, it does! It would be considered a Comprehensive claim right & not collision?? I have a $200 deductible on my Comp & $500 on my Collision. I wouldn't claim a $500 deductible but would consider claiming if it were $200. The only issue with that is that I was recently in an accident (my first ever) that totaled my other car in May 2011 thru no fault of my own but I live in a no fault state; so my insurance company paid the benefits. My wife also made a comp claim in May. If I made another claim, would it result in my rates going up?

I checked out that website too btw & fortunately there is a rep in my county so hopefully that means I won't have to ship it & it will get done quicker. I requested a quote. What would you consider a good price?
Does anyone else know of any facilities or websites in the Long Island area if this turns out to be too expensive?

Someone here bought OEM wheels for $200 a pop. Shit, eyi sold all four of his for $110. Search around Craigslist, eBay, and Google. I would not pay more than $300 to get this sorted out.

I used them about two months ago and have no complaints. They even gave me $55 for my bent rim (net price for refurbished OEM rim non-chrome was $145).

I checked eBay underneath the search RL OEM Wheels 2005-2008 & didn't see much. I will check craigslist though & I didn't know google had a site for buying autoparts.. is there a link or do you just type it in the search (I just found out google had a social networking site lol).

Wat is the part # for the 17" bc would acuraoemparts.com have it for a good deal?

The fourth link will be "Shopping Results". There are a few there for less than $300 shipped. They won't be chrome though. You will likely have to have them chromed no matter where you buy them.

Just got the car back and had a chance to inspect the wheel in the light. It is indeed bent on the backside and am curious as to why the dealer wouldn't touch it considering it would've netted them more money. Hopefully it will be an esy fix like BDoggPrelude said. I don't see anything else visibly wrong with it. I'm also awaiting a response from awrswheelrepair as well.

Finally got a reply back from awrswheelrepair & they quoted me $100 without knowing where the wheel was bent. Is that a good price? Has anyone else used these guys? Since a backside bend is an easier fix, will it affect the price?

They are also in Suffolk County but if they require me to ship & lengthen the process, does anyone know of any good shops in the Long Island, NY area that can do it without shipping?

Discount has started using this company but I have yet to use them personally just because we have a local shop that has a 24 hour turnaround. Did you tell them the wheel is chrome? That's the only other thing that might make it cost more. Did you call any of your local wheel/tire shops to see who they use?

I don't believe I did tell them the wheel was chrome but the bend is on the backside which isn't chrome. Will that matter at all? I can't see them justifying a higher cost because they will not be working on the chrome part.

Do you think $100 is a good price either way? Hopefully this will be the first and last time I have to go thru this..

$100 is a good price. On many chrome wheels the entire wheel is coated and once the surface is damaged on one area it starts to peel and eventually destroys the chrome on the rest of the wheel. When they fix the wheel it will likely leave the damaged area unfinished so this would leave a gap in the chrome plating thus leaving it susceptible to peeling. Chrome plating isn't like paint. It has to be one continuous even layer. Once weathering and corrosion gets under the surface it spreads.

Here's the damage on the backside of the wheel. The backside doesn't look like it was plated in chrome from what I see. Do you think it would jeopardize the quality of the chrome finish on the front? If so does it mean I'd have to get the entire wheel re-chromed?

I didn't know chrome wheels were so high maintenance. I wish the car would've came with reg 17" OEMS as opposed to the chrome ones : (

^ Not to laugh at your loss, but the pics above reminded me of when I had two wheels like that. After getting the price for a dealer replacements, I was stupid enough to take a giant hammer and try to bang the wheels back in shape.

Needless to say, I ended up at the dealer.

Update: awrswheelrepair worked out great. They hammered out the bend on the back side & thankfully it didn't crack.. They said beforehand that 50% of our wheels have been known to do so & if so it would've been another $50 to send out and weld it back together.

Anyway, it was $100 well spent, it was done quickly and efficiently, the guys were polite and even refused a tip. I'd highly recommend them to anyone out there since they saved me alot of money.

Afterwards I took my car to BJ's where they rotated & balanced my tires for $20 (plus a tip) and that's that..

I just had my wheels aligned a couple months back (before the pothole) but should I do it again or am I fine.. The guys from BJ's didn't notice anything but they don't do wheel alignments there either..
