P1717 and P0420 - 2005 Acura RL

Got this code with OBD interface tool. Also has a Check Engine symbol. Car has about 200,000 miles.

From browsing internet, this could be a faulty switch, either at the transmission or the floor shifter.

Anyone had to deal with this and solved it?

Also got code P0420, but I think it is unrelated.

Thanks.

P0420 - 2005 Acura RL

Got this code with OBD interface tool. Also has a Check Engine symbol. Car has about 200,000 miles.

From browsing internet, this means Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold Bank 1. So, I'm thinking it could be an O2 sensor, or the catalytic converter. Also got high short and long term fuel trims with OBD tool (all around 10).

Anyone had to deal with this and solved it?

Also got code P1717, but I think it is unrelated.

Thanks.

P1717 - Open in Transmission Range Switch ATP RVS Switch Circuit.

However, if there's is a blinking D indicator or CEL code you need to fix those codes first bc the P1717 code may be a symtom of the ohter code(s).

The engine light is related to the P0420 catalytic bank 1 error. It's probably real.

I also had this code the other day. I put the car in D and I got a CEL and ASF at the same time. When I shut the car down, ASF went away. I took the car to get the code cleared (I could not clear it with my machine) and so far P1717 has not come back. Fingers crossed.

Just to update status: P1717 gone after resetting car computer; still got P0420 after installing O2 spacer on rear O2 sensor. Though for a while that the code was gone, but a day later it came back. So, $10 and about two hours of labor wasted, but that's life. Now convinced (after much reading on internet, and here) that's it's the catalytic converter. Am checking costs for replacement, and looking for videos of someone doing it. Considering the difficulty of removing the O2 sensor, I'm not looking forward to this job.

Another thing about P1717 is that the part on the transmission range switch that rotates can be lubricated (according to a Honda tech) so that it selects with less friction. Apparently it helps not getting a P1717.

Catalytic converter... Exhaust shops should be able to do it in a jiffy.

I'm about 95% convinced its the rear catalytic converter too.

But, I read another post here by dopes6070 in January 2010 that said replacing the rear 02 sensor cleared the P0420, at least for 1100 miles -- his last post.

So, before ordering a new converter I'm thinking about switching the two 02 sensors (bank 1 to bank 2 and vice versa) to see what happens. That is if I can figure out how to disconnect the rear 02 sensor lead behind the engine. I tried doing that when I put on the O2 spacer but couldn't figure it out -- resulting in twisted wires when reinstalling sensor.

Can you provide instructions on how to go about lubing this switch? Thanks

P1717-TRS Sensor. Transmission Range Sensor. Search about it on here and get it from Rock Auto.
