Oil Change

Hey All... I prefer to change my own oil, so after reading some forums on different oil filters, I decided to stick with a 'dealer' filter. The one that came with my car had 'HONDA' emblazened across it... so I went down to the local Honda dealer and picked one up for $5.99. The question now is what Oil to use. I called my dealer and they said they use Penzoil. They didn't specify what type... I know it takes 5/20w but I'm torn as to getting regular oil, synthetic blend...or Full Synthetic.
The cost is about $8 - $15 - $22 respectively. I'm not really worried about spending an extra 14 bucks if it's worth it... but if Acura doesn't seem to have a preference.. I don't see the point in wasting money either.
Any thoughts? What do you all use? Or do you know what your dealers use?

Right now my car has 5K on it... and the oil life still says 30%
Thanks

Regular old 5W-20 dinosaur oil comes in the car. You can switch to synthetic if you want to, but I personally don't see the need. Others will disagree.

BTW - oil capacity is 4.5 qt. with filter change.

Personally I'd just use regular oil, which I think is what the dealer uses also.

I think the regular oil is as good as the synthetic for our cars but I've been using Mobil 1 and I'm happy with it. If the price difference isn't the issue...you can't go wrong with synthetics. Especially if you're staying with the schedules that the car indicates - I've seen it go as much as 8-9k miles between the oil changes. IMHO I think the synthetics would hold up better.

My policy is to change oil very 5000 miles with regular 5W20 oil. I don't like to see it run upto 8000-9000 miles on regular oil if I go by the oil life indicator. If you prefer going by the oil life indicator I would say synthetic oil is a better option. My dealer uses Chevron 5w20.

Use conventional oil. It was tested to last the intervals dictated by the MM system.

Oil Filters of the correct size/part # are designed to meet the OEM's requirement.

Use the PCX filter made for the Honda S2000 if youre going to stick with an OEM unit.

Part # is 15400-PCX-004.

For oil, I stick with dino until 10k then switch to M1 or Amsoil. This is the regiment I have followed for all my vehicles, be it track, street or bike. Probably overkill for the street, but it makes me sleep better at night so..

Picked one

Thanks for all of your suggestions and advice.
I found some Penzoil Platinum Full Synthetic on sale so I decided to go with that.
When I asked the guy at the Auto Parts store what he recommended... I think he summed it up best in saying, "Doesn't matter... they're all slippery"

Pennzoil Platinum has been selling for $1.99/qt around here lately, so I'd definitely use it at that price.

What is the difference between synthetic and synthetic blend? Is it a big difference between the two?

I agree with bkw.

I have a '03 CLS 6-speed. I change my oil every 5,000 miles with Mobil 1 and also use the Honda "S2000" oil filter (you paid for a premium car why not use premium oil and filters).

I would also wait till you have throughly "broken in" your engine before switching to synthetic oil, which means that you can switch at your second or third oil change.

My dealer uses Mobile 1 synthetic.

I've used that for years and have not had problems. i used to change my oil fanatically every 3k miles. The engines did not last as long until I switched to the synthetics and changed every 5k on my Audi. I have 130k miles on the engine and it is about the only thing that has not given trouble (exaggerating).

I think synthetics stay slipery longer, So I will just go with oil changes when the car tells me to.
