"This Is Not An Ashtray" Question

I guess as far as issues with the 2nd generation RL goes, this is pretty minor, but I recently installed an Ipod adaptor with the Ipod cable coming out through the "This is not an ashtray" opening. I had to remove the "ashtray" and cut a hole in it to run the cable through it, and have put the ashtray back in. Everything seems to be as it was before - the ashtray (although its not really an ashtray) fits fine and nothing protrudes through the opening.

Now, thought, the little "this is not an ashtray" door - the one you push down - will now not latch close. So, does anyone know what the mechanism is that allows the door to latch close?

Or you just didn't put it in right. Take it out and see if it still works in your hand!

or somehow the new ipod cable is interfering with not allowing it to fully close (not enough clearance behind the tray itself

but yes see if it works outside the car though OP

How did you get it out the first time? I would repeat that process.

I didnt remove it the 1st time. All I had to do was remove the little felt "ashtray" which just pulls out. But I'll just figure this out myself, thanks.

Remove the felt liner thing. There will be two self-tapping philips head screws. Remove those screws and then the entire cup/lid assembly will pull out. You'll need to put the shift selector in neutral to be able to get enough space.

Once it is out, you should see the little latch device on the right side.

I got both screws out but having trouble getting the assembly to pull out. Do I need to remove the cover for the shift knob as well? it looks like there is a lip that's getting caught on this.

I have heard that if you pull the front of the cover surrounding the shifter with your fingers, it will pop up. I haven't tried it, but you should be able to push your fingers in there to pop it up and not hurt anything.

did not work for me last night. that piece surrounding the shifter is pretty hard to remove.

Any other idea how I can get this assembly pulled out?

Look in some of the accessory installation directions. I recall there were items where you had to remove the trim. In particular perhaps the Acura MusicLink and even the ashtray installation directions....There may also have been a TSB on how to solve squeaks, which may have included removal of the pieces around there.

Get there through the 2GRL Garage link or the Acura e-store:
https://estore.honda.com/accesssory-...asp?make=acura

The musiclink installation instructions is this address from the above link, but may not work directly.:

http://techinfo.honda.com/rjanisis/pubs/AI/BII31183.pdf

The ashtray installation instructions are here:

Thanks for the links but when I click, it says 'i'm not authorized to view these pages'. How can I get around it? or do you have a PDF version you can PM?

Go to the estore:
https://estore.honda.com/asp/tabsele...ShoppingType=A

Or use the My Acura link and drill down to the Accessories link which takes you to the estore.

http://owners.acura.com/Parts/Accessories.aspx

Or use the 2GRL Garage links stickied at the top of the 2GRL forum.

I recommend searching the forums first before placing a thread - this is a third separate thread about the exactly same thing in the last two days...

I already gave him crap in the thread he started. I pointed him to this thread (and the other you mentioned), and he took it over here.

Also per this, center console (surrounding the shifter) has four clips underneath that I need to 'un-click' in order to remove. any idea how I can do that?

Like 007spy said... I tried searching for 'coin tray' and did not see anything related to this. Did not realize 'latch' was the term to use. Once again i'm sorry but it's not always easy to search if you don't know that 'keyword' to look for.
