Normal Engine Sound?
Normal Engine Sound?
New 2G RL owner here. The engine, in addition to its usual purr, seems to emit a thin whining like overtone. The best way to describe that sound is an electric motor's "whine." Another comparison would be the whine of a little RC toy car. This happens only during acceleration with the throttle engaged. Is this normal? I never heard anything like this on my 99 RL, which has an engine that makes music above 2.5k rpm.

This sound only occurs during acceleration (throttle down) and occurs at all speeds including from dead stop, again, as long as the throttle is engaged. It doesn't sound all that unnatural as it resembles electric motor noise or some kind rotating part.
i think you should take a look at your belt and all the components it runs. doesnt hurt to take off the belt and check. check the belt tension also. cause to me it sounds like the higher in rpm the faster the belts and the components run resulting in a whining noise. if it was the drive shaft i would assume it would make a noise on and off acceleration.

k083, to be sure check the transmission fluid level and top off..
I had heard a whine for a short while prior to an A16 code appeared
(lube/ 'diff. fluid' change); more importantly this is dependent on 'your' driving habits.
I only had approx. 7.5k between a diff. fluid change and the next warning (6) code.
...i do hope it is simple fix for you........sweet ride!!

I just want to add that the pitch of this whine is RPM dependent. The higher the engine RPM, the higher the pitch and seems to fade into a low ticking sound characteristic of diesel trucks at idle when the car is stopped. At highway speeds, it is drowned out by wind and road noise, but is most noticeable at lower RPMs. I also want to mention that this sound does not resemble a turbine whine. It is a mid-range sound, nothing near the high pitched turbine scream.
I have similar issues with whistling/howling noises
It seems when I have my foot on the gas it makes that sound. Some have said that its harder to hear on the freeway because of the rougher roads. I notice that on parts of the freeway that are smooth asspault, you definetly can hear it. I had a Acura mechanic drive it and he couldn't hear it. I am guessing he drove on the rougher parts of the freeway. Also, sometimes the noise isn't there, but most of the time it is. I am going to have it looked at with me in the car driving.
