New owner of RL with a question

Hello every one,
I am mark from san antonio, I bought an used 2006 RL today and the first thing I have noticed is the delay in shifting when I first put the car in drive.

After I back up and put it in drive to move forward the car waits a second to engage and drive and also it is giving a jerky start. Can some one tell me if this normal with the transmission or is this some thing that needs to be checked.
Any help is deeply appreciated.

This is normal.

The car is running a test on the ABS. Everytime you start the car, the 1st time you engage the tansmission into DRIVE it will run this test with a slight pause and tug.

Where did you by it from in San Antonio, was it tech, certified? How much did you pay for it if you don't mind me asking.

I have an 05 and it does not do this. I pull the car out of the garage in reverse, then put it in drive, no delay and no tug.

It is common to all Acura's. It was much more noticeable on my TL which sometimes made a 'click' or slight 'thunk'. It is barely perceptible in my RL, but I back into my garage and most parking spaces.

It typically does it as you shift into DRIVE after starting the car, and up to 5mph as you drive off.

It can be very subtle and I rarely notice it anymore. If you are on the throttle as DRIVE gear engages, you may not notice it. Try shifting into DRIVE without touching the throttle...perhaps then you may notice it.

I bought it at GUNN Acura and yes it was certified. It is non tech I did not like the car controlling it self concept and also the PAX tires so I went with non tech. It was 25500 with 29500 miles on the odo.

I thought my tranny oil needed to be changed because of this. I had the oil changed and it still did but you don't feel it as much now. I too bought my RL in San Antonio.

I think what was originally being described was a bit of a transmission jump. I get it on occasion if I throw it right into drive after starting the car. Normally a fluid change will help this a bit, however as long as it isn't thumping into gear I think its reasonably normal.

Ditto here. My 05's been doing this for as long as I can remember. If I don't give it a half a second before hitting the gas after I've backed out of the driveway there is a pretty good lurch as the transmission changes direction.

thanks tampa, glad to know the reasoning behind this as I too have noticed this on my 05.

to OP, nice price on yours. D. McD Acura here in austin is charging $25,900 for an '05 with 57k miles...ridiculous!! they've always been too expensive though.

good luck

Thanks, I checked D. McD Acura and also some dealers in houston. This was the cheapest price I have found. Good thing or bad I dont know about GUNN is that they have no negotiation policy.

In this economy, EVERYTHING is negotiable.

This dealer either does not need business or is plain stupid.

I suspect the latter.

Was it the red one? I've bought 3 cars from them and I've always liked the RL. I've had great experiences with my cars (2 used, 1 new).
That looked like a great car, enjoy it.

Tampa is on the money. They must sense something from you that they feel they don't need to negotiate. I can't imagine they are that stupid.....well.......could they be? Have they looked at autotrader.com lately? I'd use that in negotiation, you need something to leverage with. I am sure they will crumble if they know you are going elsewhere. (Thanks Mr. Obvious.......your welcome, son!).

i agree with all of you about this thump. it happens to me too. and it happened to me on my cl. it is normal.. now one thing that will stop it is if you press firmly on your brake pedal it will not do the thump. i have noticed it will not do it.

but then again who pushes down firmly on the brake pedal. i know i don't do it all the time. only a once in a while. but thats what i do.

The thump, or tug is the ABS test actually applying the brakes. I assume it is performed when there is some level of load (in DRIVE or up to 5mph). I would assume the slight pause from shifting into DRIVE is just the systems processing time for sensors, brake application, tranny engagement, and CPU processing.

Putting the RL (and most Acuras) in DRIVE seems to accomplish more things than I get done on any given day.

When I think about all the processes and functions these cars do, I am dazzled. All those dash lights (checking systems) when ignition is turned on that we take for granted, the NAVI boot up, the satellite pinging, the AFS headlights testing, ULEV adjusting ignition and fuel, vacuum sensors, fuel pressure, climate control sensors, memory settings, etc, etc.

Thank you. No it was not the red one. By the time I went there some one already bought it. They had a grey one, that is the one I have bought.

I would prefer the grey to red, also, what interior did you get? Did you test drive any other Acura's? I'm curious to know about road/tire/engine noise. Is it quiet inside the cabin? That is my only complaint about my TSX is there is too much noise in the cabin. What kind of MPG are you getting so far? You should post some pictures...

I am sorry for the late reply guys, had a project deadline so very busy with that. I liked grey better than the red, coincidentally all previous cars I had were grey with the same taupe interior. I test drove a new TSX and a TL but I did not get the fell I got with the RL so I went with the RL. I really love this car it saved my ass the other day. Wonderful handling. I felt RL is more quitier than TSX and also TL. I am averaging 22 mixed so not bad and I have no complaints about that because I knew what I was getting into. I will wash it this week end and post the pictures.

Sounds good. When we bought our TSX, they didn't have any 05 RL's for the same price, as well as I will never buy another first model year of any vehicle. I loved my RSX, but thank god for the extended Acuracare warranty I bought.

I saw a neat video on this forum, it's a sticky at the top and I am very impressed with the RL. The only deal breaker would be if the RL isn't much quieter than the TSX.

Not bad on gas mileage, I assume about 17/18 city and 26/27 on the highway. That's about 4mpg less than my TSX.

I look forward to your pictures. I think the RL is a very impressive vehicle and very underrated. Keep the comments comming. By the way, what did you trade in?

.

Oh tell me about it... this is the quietest car I have ever owned. I think the same and it has enough power and options to play with. I never drove a car with V6 engine this is my first one and I am really happy with the way car moves. I liked TSX and in fact I went in to buy 09 TSX, just out of curiosity I test drove this I could not leave it. I traded in 2008 camry XLE.
