For those that are always complaining about how slow the RL is here is a little anecdote.
I was driving down an empty road today doing a cruise 75. A "young punk" with a spanking new G35x decided to breeze by at around 85, since the stretch of road is long, straight and empty, I did a quick shift to third and gave it a go. The G was owned from the get go, it could not out accelerate or close the gap till around 130 when he gave up , luckily, of course, since the RL hit the speed limiter at 134 while still going on way strong I hate speed limiters!!!!
BTW a few hours before the Infinty saga while on the same drive an SRT4 was owned in the same fashion much to its owner's chagrin
So, there you have it, the RL may not be the fastest jackrabbit but its got some loooong legs These 2 little "kills" made me feel good all over with the RL again!

Certainly not. But I don't know how often you end up racing guys at red lights anyway. For most of us highway ability is exponentially more important than what happens from a stop. This anecdote is evidence that the RL is a performance bad boy where it matters!

First, I'd like to say to those of you whom haven't seen my postings here, I'm a 2008 G35X Sport owner and was seriously considering a 2008 RL before buying the G. Both are phenomenal cars in their own right. G is sportier and the RL is more luxurious.

That being said, if you look at the numbers posted by R&T with all due respect to RL06Tech, the G (albeit Sport package, which according to magazines is just a little bit quicker than the awd version), is a lot quicker than the RL.

When it comes to braking the G Sport did a lot better too. The G35X Sport with the smaller brakes probably won't do as well as the RWD sport.

The handling of the RL is pretty close in terms of slalom and lateral G so I'd attribute that to the SH-AWD doing a great job of keeping the car's line. The RL is close to 300 lbs heavier than the G35X.

Given those acceleration numbers, I think you may have caught the G driver off guard or he/she wasn't ready to push the car all the way. My G has 750 miles on it and I'm not going to push it until (I break it in properly) and I can't wait either. That engine is extremely rev-happy.

I'll be happy to burst your bubble too when the time comes HEHE! Remember all the times that you quote are from a standstill, they have little to do once the cars are running!!! Of course, I don't know if the G was auto or manual the fact is he couldn't keep up from 75 to 130, end of story

 

Sorry but you're not looking deeper into it. Since you brought up 75-130, the closest numbers I listed are 60-100 mph which are from R&T..

The RL takes 9.8 seconds to go from 60-100.

The G35 Sport takes 8.1 seconds to go from 60-100.

So whether you're starting from a stand still or moving, the amount of time it takes to go from 60-100 is not affected by your start, as your gas pedal is floored. So, I'm standing by my reasoning..

The G35X is an automatic as well...

Larrynimmo, yeah, thought about it a bit. I take a good look at any 2nd Gen RL I see on the road.

Believe me, it was a hard decision and I know that with either car, I wouldn't have gone wrong..

However, I'd have to say no regrets at the end of the day. I have a toy and my wife is accepting it, begrudgingly. She wasn't comfortable with cost of the RL, as it would have been roughly $5-6K more than what we paid for the G.... Hell, she doesn't like the idea of spending more than $60K on 2 cars... We have an 06 Ody EX-L as well what we got new.

I keep explaining to her the average car costs about $28K already so you've got to expect to spend close to $60K for 2 cars and this isn't 1985 anymore....

 

i never knew that a 43 yr old would still drive like a moron. anyways, the real reason why the G35x lost to you is because the speed governor of the G35x is only 130mph. if you were going to race a G35s, the speed governor of that is 145mph and it would beat the RL.

 

43 is the perfect age to be a moron, it beats being a 28 year ahole any day. The fact still stands he got OWNED, beaten, shamed, and I have paraded him as my biatch

What was even funnier is that after his humiliation all he could offer was the finger and then continued on at over 90 mph when I dropped back to cruising speed, like most DATSUN owners, a sore LOSER!

do you know how old the young punk was? based on what you wrote, i like honda/acura cars, but i also like infiniti cars too even though i know that nissan is their parent company. not really a nissan fan though except for the upcoming GT-R. do you just despise nissan/infiniti cars in general due to a bad experience or are a honda/acura fan?

i don't know about you, but i'd take the G37 coupe over the s2000 or even the TL-S anyday.

 

also, i think nissan makes great engines, but honda makes better interiors. i just have no respect for toyotas cause they're boring cars with no soul. even some of the lexus cars have no soul when you drive them including the IS350, which i drove it's fast, but it didn't feel enjoyable to drive unlike acura and infiniti cars. if you owned a IS350 or an GS350, then i'll be congratulating you, but acura and infiniti vehicles are both fun to drive.

This is a significant difference in performance. Imagine walking at 1mph (almost standing still in slow motion) and another person running past you at 6mph. The sensation should be similar according to above data, 6+mph in trap speed is pretty substantial.

That is not to say "anything can happen on street". But the performance difference mention above seems a bit too big for "anything" though...

Anyhow, I would still spick RL over G35x any day though. Personal preference, I just think G and M from infiniti are not attractive inside and out.

 

As I mentioned above, you can't go wrong with the RL, M, or G. It's what your budget allows and what you're looking for.

If I could have spent the extra $5-6K, I would have gone for the RL. Since I couldn't, G it was. I agree with the M not being attractive. The G has something about it that I like.

 

I test drove a G35 last week as I am looking to come out of the RL. The G was one of the nosiest cars I have ever driven. The noise from the tires has a resonance that sounding like I was in a bucket. I told the salesman, no way a supposed luxury car should be this noisy. All he could so was smile. I was very disappointed as I want to like this car. On the other hand I could put up with the noise in the G37S :-)

 

This is just personal opinion. Unless a car has significant performance potential, there is no point of comparing which one is faster than others.

For instance, I recall watching this youtube video where this group of kids in a regular civic with a few bolt ons, trying to race civic si, and marginally won, and they were hysterical about it.

If I saw RL and G35x racing on a highway, I would laugh (no punt intended). If I saw Z06 racing against Viper, I would say, "crazy nuts!" but would still think 'cool...'

I love RL the way it is. Maybe a few bolt ons and suspension upgrade in the future, but that's about it. Knowing that even a full size Toyota Tundra truck can give RL run for its money at a stop sign, I accept my RL as what it is inteded to be, a comfortable luxury cruiser that surpasses all my expentations.

If it means anything, there was this one time, when I was driving my E39M5, coming off an exit on Dulles Toll Road, 90 degree wide angle exit, following a black RL. I was following a bit close (not tailgating though), but to my surprise, RL kept on speeding up that exit curve, almost to the point when I started to feel uncomfortable in my M5. Of course I did not back out, but I couldn't believe the agility of RL through that curve. And now, that was impressive.

One of the common complaints with the G and the M is road noise. I can imagine it being an issue in the M as it's the luxury car of the 2. The G is supposed to compete against the 3 series.. I haven't driven a 3 series but personally, I don't find the road noise of the G to be an issue.

One of my complaints about many luxury cars is the lack of noise, where I can't hear the engine, exhaust, or whatever, as long at it doesn't sound "bad" (subjective). When I use the paddle shifter of my G, I like to be able to hear the engine so I can gauge when to shift, by sound, without having to look down at the tach.

On the other hand, maybe I'm going deaf as I get older...

 

No, black RL along the Dulles Toll Road, frequently enjoying SHAWD on the ramps there and on Route 28.

 

If you remember seeing a black M5 following you through rt 28 exit ramp, maybe you were the one.

That RL kept speeding up and up through that curve without a hint of slowing down.

 

Much as I hate to admit it, that could well have been me pulling that bone headed stunt trying to find the limit of the SHAWD.

I keep wondering how the car will perform with some high performance rubber once the PAX tires wear out. I am continually impressed by how well they are wearing, and how well they perform for touring tires.

 

I do not mind engine noise under WOT. I think the the RL is wonderful at VTEC.
The new JAG XF engine is just pure music under WOT. Really, the interior noise from the G was unbearable for me. Like I have said many times, when the RL is your baseline, its makes it hard on the other cars, because the RL is just so good. Its a shame only owners know how good the RL is. So far the dealers only want to give me 28K(and that is tops) on a pristine 06 with less then 20K

 

....and it sounds even better with exhaust and intake. Oh, believe me, it does. It SOUNDS like a luxury sporting (not sports) sedan.

 

Glad I got out when I did & got $35k 6 months ago for an 06 w/25,000miles. I could see the writing on the walls that values were tanking.

 

My girl friend had a 08 G35X auto as a loaner for a week while her 02 Q45 was in for warrenty repairs. When ever i get a chance to drive sport sedans/Coupe i drive them hard. Based on my experience with it id say the X will edge out the RL from a dig and straight away but in cornering well that really is all about the driver.I do agree with you geronimomoe, But HEY!!! winning is winning. nice kill

 

Doesn't surprise me; from a roll, especially at higher speeds, the RL pulls pretty darn well... good kills!

 

....... then skwidstyle rolls up on both of you guys in his 1st gen once you've both peeked out with your speed govs. and flies by you doing 150 .... oh the 1st gens. - gotta love em'!!!!

 

Well, this is an old thread and my "compare your schlong" story involves a roll-on contest with a different car, but the 3rd gear reference above resonated with me.

This weekend, we were on a run up to Los Angeles, in the diamond lane (carpool only, trapped by double-yellow lines with designated ingress/egress sections) and came up on an beautiful Mercedes CLS 500 in the same lane. He had throttle issues: pumping from 70-75-70, up and down without cars in front of him, and an RL about 4 car lengths back that had been cruising at 80. I hung back, but I know he could see me because of the infernal DRL's on the front of our car.

As we approached an ingress/egress section, I smoothly rolled up a little closer for a polite pass, using the paddle shifter for a (slow) shift down to 4th to enable me do to it smoothly. As I pulled out into the adjacent lane for a casual pass, but about 10mph faster than he, he stood on the gas! WTF? A great sound, by the way, and he jumped ahead while I reacted with another downshift on the paddle (waiting, waiting...) to 3rd and I stood on it, too.

Holy smokes, the VTEC performs well in anger. I caught him, passed him, tossed it into 4th and passed back into the diamond about two lengths ahead of him all before crossing 110mph. That 3rd gear pull is impressive and wrenched us past him in a blink! The whole thing might have been 5 seconds long before I was back into 5th gear and cruising again. I passed him so fast and took the lane that he didn't even have time to wind it out.

If he'd suddenly developed the testes to drive 80+, I'd have gladly let him pass but he slowed back to his pumping pace and other cars entered the lane ahead of him.
