Impessed with brake wear

My RL has 70K miles and I just went in today for A1 service. My dealer does a multi-point inspection when you take the car in for anything and I was sure they were going to tell me I was due for new brakes since I'm still on the original brakes.

The SM comes out and says, "you're all set". I asked if everything checked out and he said yes. I asked, "How are the brakes?".

He pulls up the sheet and says I still have 40% pad left. I was surprised. He said that he had a lady with an MDX that went 108K miles on the original pads.

Gotta love that I went in expecting to be told I was due for expense work needed, and instead came away only out the $48 for an oil change and tire rotation.

This explains why Honda's parts are expensive. They simply last longer.

also notice that our rl's changes gears to help slow the vehicle when rolling to a stop. good for brakes bad for gas.

I would say in the first year and a half of it's life (when I lived in the Chicago 'burbs), no. Definitely yes in the past 2.5 years since I moved to SE Michigan.

When I lived in Illinois, it wasn't necessarily "city" driving, more suburban. I drive mostly highway now.

116,000 miles on my 06 RL with original brakes......a record for me. I put 112,000 of these miles on since March 2008 so it is mostly highway, but living in metro DC this RL spends a lot of time on the DC and Baltimore beltways too.

Everything has held up sans the drivers seat leather and the infamous propellor shaft (replaced under CPO at 96k).

The paint and of rest of the interior are all showroom new.

my front brakes went at 25k...that's New York City for you.

Went with Satisfied Gran Sport 6 and the braking improved tremendously over stock.

Rear brakes still stock and kicking.

i'm new to AWD cars.. just got a 07 RL white/black ... since it's AWD... when do the rear brakes work? only for E braking? Or do rear brakes also help while stopping? Thanks for the replies

all brakes work when hitting the brake pedal.

rear only brakes work when you stomp the foot brake.

Front brakes hold when parked.

The rear brakes work the same way in AWD car as a 2WD car. So when you apply the brake pedal all four wheels brake. Your car brakes are also modulated by various computer controlled systems such as Antilock Brake System (ABS), Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA). Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist.

Read about it here

http://hondanews.com/channels/acura-...ura-rl-chassis

The emergency/parking brake, is actually a separate cable actuated braking system with its own brake shoes that are different from the hydraulically activated front and rear brake calipers that you think of.

Satisified GranSport 6 from TireRack if you want braking performance that is far superior to stock.

That's what I got on my car now.

I cannot remember what you said when you got your new pads....did you have to bed them in as described below?

I was definitely bedding them in along with new slotted rotors I got...

heck I thought I was gonna be sick.

I had a nice friend perform the acceleration, sudden braking procedure...wonder if I woulda been less sick if I was doing it my self.

I only got the front pads done but I already have a 2nd set and rears in the trunk cause they're that good!
