Idling/ RPM Driven Whine

I noticed yesterday the RL produces a whining noise during idle. When I rev the engine, the pitch of the whine gets higher. When I drive, I can still hear the whining noise, and is RMP driven. However, after a 60-mile trip, the whine seem to have disappeared... until this morning.

I did have the propeller shaft replaced a couple of months ago, due to the 30mph to 35 mph whirling issue.

The RL is a 2007 with about 48,000 miles.

I am going to setup an appointment today with Acura Service, but does anyone have any suggestions?

My only suggestion is to call them back and request a high end loaner (maybe mention you are shopping), then sit back and let them do the work.

Believe it or not, since I purchased this RL back in 10-2010, I've driven pretty much ALL of the Acura lineup as loaners. My least favorite was the ZDX!

Agreed on the ZDX, I usually get a tech TSX if I don't ask for something else.

On a 3G TL...
It's an o-ring on the power steering pump but that is mostly associated with cold weather whistle/whine and goes away after a few minutes.

If it's persistent, my guess would be that it's going to end up being the idler or tensioner pulley. At least it was on my TL. Ended up replacing belt and entire tensioner assembly (that includes both of these pulleys) for $160. I did it myself though...took all of 30 minutes.

VQ & L's: No bluetooh. I can hear the whine from outside of the car.

rockstar: I hope that's covered under the warranty!

I'm sure it will be. If it's not, it's a pretty cheap thing to get fixed. But I would suggest buying the part and paying someone to install rather than let the dealership try and run it up.

It MAY be considered a wear and tear item...but hopefully not.

I agree with rockstar that it is something that changes with the operating temperature. No ideas to give you a starting point, but I would go with his suggestions. When you stop after a drive and are idling a normal operating temperature, can you hear it?

15 minutes of driving = yes, I can still here it.

60 minutes of driving = no.

hear.
Hmmm...maybe a belt that has to warm up to tighten up? Or are the bearings on the pulleys slowly going. I mean, it will likely get to the point where you hear it all the time.

Best of luck, let us know the outcome!

Dropped off the car and picked up a... ZDX. I gave them a huge to-do list this time, and I am confident they'll take care of it. I'll keep you guys posted when I know what's going on.

By the way, I spoke with someone today who used to own a 20 car garage in Georgia and he thinks the car shaking issue I have may be a belt separation/ broken belt in the tire(s). I have also suspected that, but it's hard to prove and pin-point... so I may need to try that eventually - although the tires are practically brand new.

The ZDX looks good, but is an under performer. It's not as peppy as I'd like it to be, but it does handle EXTREMELY well! My biggest complaint is the rear quarter panel blind spot on either side of the rear window. The seat is also not very comfortable... not quite supportive either.

The verdict is in! The dealer replaced the alternator under warranty.
