How to bypass heated seats "protection"

Hi All!

I've had an issue now for more than a few years about something I do not like about my RL. Heated Seats Protection.

I have some lower back issues and use the heated seats, even in the summer. However, there is some sort of protection once the seats get warm that either stops or effectively pauses the heating of the seats. A standard cycle is something like:

Turn on switch - heated seats get warm for 3-5 minutes....then the seats clearly stop heating for about 10-15 minutes....then back to heating for 3-5 minutes.

In my other cars, the heated seats just stay on until you turn them off. That's exactly what I want to do here with my RL. Anyone know how to bypass the heated seats "protection"?

I would think it's best not to override this "protection" that was engineered into the seats. I can only see bad things happening.

This is the intended functionality of the heated seats in HI mode. In LOW mode, they stay on continuously. It only cycles in HI. Unfortunately, there is no easy way that I know of to get it to stay on without cycling in HI.

Anyone know if it's in the switch or a sensor in the seat somewhere?

After a little more research, it would appear that a heated seat thermistor signal circuit could be the cause - if anyone knows more about that, that would be appreciated.

I don't have an RL anymore but I always thought HI would get them to the desired temperature and then LOW would maintain that temperature indefinitely.

lol that is the intended function.

OP should use the intended functions of the seat heaters.

If you don't know the answer, kindly refrain from responding. It's not helpful to anyone reading the post.

why not?

is you can bypass the "protection" by switching it to the "low" setting not a valid answer?

That's an option, but cumbersome and somewhat slippery. Would rather 'release' functionality already available. Seems pretty simple. Some have said to insulate the thermistor, other's have asked if it's negative or positive.

It's be 2nd easiest to add an inline thermistor for $2 and some labor.

Sheesh, what did we do 15 years ago? I guess we all died and burned to death without someone else preaching about protecting us.

Thanks justnspace, - knowing how it works is key. Low is not a valid answer simply because it doesn't get as warm as HI does. When it's on HI, it gets warmer than on low. My Suburban has the same Lo / Hi and when HI is selected, it stays on, period.

In the RL, after some research, I find out there are these thermistors that are inline. I want to bypass or augment these thermistors and am wondering if someone has done that. I figured coming to Acurazine would have knowledgable people whom would be able to assist.

But some people missed the question. The question was not "is it safe", the question was not "is it the intended functionality", the question was not "what do you think about performing said task".....

I just want the responses to be germaine to the question posed - for any post really no matter what the question.....hth

You missed the suggestion. First, apply the heater with "Hi". When the desired temperature is reached, switch to "Lo". That will keep it at the desired temp.

Does it work? , but it seems you missed that part of Wackjum's suggestion.

BTW, what does the manual say regarding the function?

If you remove the protection feature your heated seat will burn out and then you will have nothing (except and expensive bill to replace the heating element). The heated seats burning out was an issue for Acura, or at least it was for the 2nd gen TL and CL. My guess is that they put the protection feature on high mode to protect the element because they are otherwise prone to failure if left on high to long.
