Help, 08 RL started on its own
Help, 08 RL started on its own
Hi everyone, here is the back story.
I was showing a fellow worker how my swiping of the back of hand locks my car. I showed him a few times, and then we walked away and my 2008 Acura RL started. I didn't even know how to shut it off. I stepped on the brake and it finally shut down. I bought it used so I honestly don't know if it has a remote starter. I checked under the column and didn't see anything. I repeated the process and swiped 3 x and walked away and the car started again.
How do I find out if I have a remote starter?

I assume you are tricking the car into thinking you are pressing lock and unlock.
Doe this happen?
Does this work?
I would remove this starter.
Remote Starting The Vehicle: Press and release the proper button or combination of buttons on your transmitter to activate the remote start system. The vehicle will start and remain running for the pre-programmed 10 or 15 minutes.

As a visual indication, the parking lights will flash or turn on depending on the programming set up by your installation center.
When you arrive at your vehicle, unlock the vehicle by pressing and releasing the unlock button of your keychain transmitter or by use of the vehicle key. Enter the vehicle and turn the ignition key to the ON position. CAUTION! Do not turn the key to the start position. This will cause the starter motor to engage with the running engine which could result in damage. Step on the brake pedal to disengage the remote start unit. The vehicle will continue to run on it's own power.
NOTE: The engine will stop running before the expiration of the pre-programmed run timer if you complete any of the following:
- Pressing the proper button or buttons of your transmitter while running under control of the remote start system will turn the vehicle off.
- Depress the vehicle's brake pedal.
- Open the hood.
- Move the red handled control switch to the OFF position.
- Race the engine to above 4000 RPM.
Does this work?
OPERATING ON AUTOMATIC START TIMER MODE: The system has the ability to automatically start the vehicle every 2 or 4 hours over a 48 hour period. This feature is especially useful in cold climates where the only means to keep the engine and engine fluids warm is to periodically start the engine.
Regardless of the situation, this feature would make me very nervous due to the risk of a malfunction.

Total surprise, still can't turn it on by what I did earlier. I tried every combination on my key fob.
To someone who posted before, the brake did shut it down. I'm hoping I can figure it out.

Just found this on some Toyota RAV4 thread about the CA410a:
Hit "lock" twice within 2 seconds, pause and then hit "lock" again and it starts. in their OEM remote situation... perhaps that's how it's setup?
Also, apologies - i misread the initial post and thought it said that the brake DIDN'T shut it down

I tried that combination and it didn't work. I'm guessing since I unlock the door with the fob and then lock it with the handle that both the unlock and lock have to be used in this Contra up down up down sequence. Aggravating
Craziness. The weird thing about that is there either has to be a key fob somewhere in the car or the system somehow tricks the car into thinking there's a fob inside. Kind of makes me wonder how secure the car is and if it could be started without having the fob in the car...
From my understanding of Megatron's explanations, at a minimum, the car needs either the fob and the dummy key (knob) or the RFID transponder in the physical key base and the physical key to turn the ignition to (II). The last part is the most important. The car cannot be driven (or shifted out of park) without the ignition set to (II). The starter only needs an electrical signal to start the engine, so the engine can be started without any of the fob, key, or transponder. However, you can't go anywhere unless you can turn the ignition.
Please tell us (or PM me) if you find the combination. My truck supposedly has a remote starter, but I can't figure out the combo either. I'll let you know if I find out.

I know this is a few months later, but I finally figured out the steps to starting my car. It was Lock, Unlock, Lock slowly. After 2 seconds, the car starts on its own. Now my issue is, I get into the car and cant move the ignition to switch to be able to press on the brake without it shutting off. Im on to the next piece of the puzzle.
I never brought it to a mechanic. No need to. It's running really good. I may have solved the rest of the mystery. So I am ae to remote start it from far away and when I get in I either press on the brake and shut it off and then restart it or I take the valet key out and move the ignition switch. Problem solved
I have my remote start set up to where it will start when the lock button is pressed three times in a row. I did this so I didnt have to carry around an extra FOB and just used the OEM one. The OEM FOB's range sucks though.
