A good laugh...
So I went to Acura this morning to get them to take care of my B136. I just don't have time or all the resources necessary to tackle on my own. So of course an hour later they call me and tell me there are a million things wrong with my car. Along with some other fluids and outside drive belt, they went on to tell me that both front and rear rotors need to be change and that the rotors cannot be machined. So for entertainment purposes I ask how much the brake job would be, he then goes on to say $749 for the front and $720 for the rear. $1400+ fro brakes and rotors?!?! I laughed and told him tell me when the B136 is done and to come and pick me up. My question is this...how much is a brake job similar in nature for the guys in the US as a dealer. I'm clearly going to get my own parts and get the job done on my own, but I'm just curious. Also if my rotors do in fact need changing, are there any decent drilled rotors? I function is better than form but I like the look.

^the acquaintances that come to me for brake work all have different makes and models of cars.
it's the skill involved and nothing more.
Most people DONT KNOW how to inspect and or work on their own brakes.
even tho it is a simple process, people get scared at "this is the most important piece of machinery, as it stops your car." thought.
Because, I have the skill or knowledge, I can charge $200 for a simple brake pad change that takes an hour or less.
and the dealer is doing the same.

I have been told by a few independent mechanics that its no longer worth it to machine the rotors since most brands are using cheaper material, although I'm not sure how true that is.
However, you can't walk into a dealership and expect
1) They aren't going to charge a premium.
2) They aren't going to up sell.
I have a good relationship with Acura2000 in Brampton, but even they try to push more work needing to be done. You just have to use your judgement against theirs and know what you do and don't need in order to avoid being ripped off.
Nick is the service manager there - if you wanted to give him a try and see if they can do any better on the pricing.

I don't know about a dealer, but I paid $80 for pads and $110 for installation and resurfacing for just the front on a CR-V through Brake Specialists. Add the rear in with 4 rotors, and I would think you could have a complete job for a reasonable $680, $220 labor + $480 parts.
Now, a dealer wants $140/front rotor (list price), $162/rear rotor (Tire Rack rear rotors are 1/2 the price of fronts ), $217 for front pads & $81 for rear pads. Just with the parts at list prices, you are looking at $602. Throw in $110-$140/hr labor, and ... Well, I don't see how they got up to $1400, but I got you closer.

That seems more reasonable for the engine, trans, t-case and rear diff fluid changes compared to the brake service.
