Im looking to getting a second key fob but i dont know what my best option is, can i program it myself if i was to get it online or should i just go to a dealer?? Any help is appreciated thnx

You cannot program the RL key fob yourself. The instructions above are for key fobs that only lock/unlock the doors. The keyfob for the RL has an immobilizer in it as well, so it requires dealer programming or someone with the Honda HDS computer.

 

would that also apply to a mdx 03 nav. too? i need a fob for that one too..

 

No... what I mentioned about needing dealer to program only applies to Hondas/Acuras with keyless ignition. The RL has keyless ignition... as far as I know the 03 MDX does not. So with the MDX, you can program the fob using those directions given in the link above, but if you want to add a key, then you need to go to a dealer.

We bought our 06 RL 2 months ago with Driver 1 FOB. Ordered Driver 2 FOB from dealer so we'd know it would work. My wife called a locksmith who said they can program it but I'm sure locksmith DOES NOT have an 'HDS' computer!!!! From your post we'll HAVE to get it programmed at the dealer? They got $265 from me already, trying not to give them another $75 but I don't want to screw around - just want it done right! Thanks!

 

Wow! You paid $265 for the fob??!! I hope you got the fob and physical key for that price!

I would have gone to eBay for the parts and the dealer for the programming. That would have been cheaper! But anyways, too late now. As for the locksmith thing, some locksmiths do have access to a stripped down version of the Hds for key programming only, but they have to pay to get that so you better make sure they have it for sure.

On the RL, programming is actually a two part process because they have to program the immobilized for the physical key as well as the fob for the keyless start and remote locks.
