Have you taken a look into the service manual? It is posted in the Garage Sticky.

Lilryan,

The fuel filter on a '05 RL is located within the fuel pump, which is located inside of the fuel tank. You would have to remove the fuel pump in order to access the fuel filter.

For a visual reference, the fuel filter is depicted as ref #4 and the fuel pump is depicted as ref #16 in the diagram below:

Ive changed the fuel pumps on these acuras. Not too difficult. So if you really wanted to change the filter it wouldnt be too hard.

Where do we buy it?

Is the fuel filter actually sold as separate part at the dealer? Does anyone know the part number for the RL?

I've replaced the fuel filter on a Nissan Maxima 3.5L and the idea was the same. Filter was inside the fuel pump assembly. I got it replaced on my own in less than 1hr time. At 82k miles, the filter was VERY dirty.

I am thinking about doing the same thing with the filter on the RL, as long as i can buy the filter from somewhere and get a detailed diagram of the pump assembly. I wonder if there're any tricks.

The trick is to drop your gas tank. It is a pain in the ass and will cost you $$$ in labor. Honda would not have made it so inaccessible if they felt it needed replacement. Run 91 grade or higher fuel, and you should not have any problems.

I know this a old thread but if you look at part #21 there is a access panel to access the fuel pump so changing the fuel filter should be like the rest of the new cars out there unhook the lines and pull the pump out.

I will do a DIY fuel filter change soon.

Here is what the kit looks like .

Looking forward to the write up. How much did the new filter cost you?

you do not have to drop your fuel tank. To get access to the fuel pump/filter you simply remove the rear seat. you will see to access covers. one of them is for access to the pump/filter. I replaced my pump about a year ago. it was easy. it maybe took an hour.

Hey guys,
What's the consensus on fuel filter. In SM it tells you to replace it after 8 years or thereabout. Is it worth doing?

What part of the SM did you read that? The Fuel Supply System section says, "The fuel filter should be replaced whenever the fuel pressure drops below the specified value, after making sure that the fuel pump and the fuel pressure regulator are OK."

but it's true that once you go inside for details it says to check pressure...I guess this statement has got higher priority than "replace" at 8 years mark? Then again, why would they even bother putting it in the maintenance schedule after 8 years?

I'm just interested in what copy of the service manual you have.

It's a European version for Honda Legend (which is USA's Acura RL). Is it that in USA you don't have this replacement in maintenance schedule at all?

That is very different than the RL. Timing belt is 105k miles, for example, and engine oil is 7500, roughly, not 9. I would not follow that for the RL.

I'm willing to bet that is a direct translation from the JDM version the enginners put together, and it is the proper intervals. Honda of America probably adjusted everything down to increase dealer maintenance appointments.

thomask, that looks like a digital copy of the SM. Do you mind sharing? If you don't want to do it publicly, I can give you an email.

I don't mind sharing it but the whole SM weighs ~2GB. Any ideas where to upload it?

Finally. Hope it works guys - digital copy of SM for EU:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0Bzm...ew?usp=sharing

It's pretty cumbersome to use, though. I open it up in IE (nothing else works). Then you have to change language to English (German is the default).

Personal opinion based on nothing: This car, as some have eloquently put it, is "one of the last of the great Japanese tanks." I plan on taking the approach of No Malfunction, No Replace Fuel Filter.
