Fuel filter vs Fuel pump replacement?

Hey yall,
I have a 2002 Acura TL base model and I've noticed a 25% decrease in MPG, so I'm looking to start replacing a few things in hopes to combat this decreased fuel economy. One of the problems I've read is that an old, dirty fuel filter can decrease fuel economy and hp. I started looking into it more and one video i watched about a 2001 honda accord mentioned that that the fuel filter is inside of the fuel pump and is a pain to remove/clean. This made me wonder if it would be a smarter option to just replace the entire fuel pump or would cleaning the filter be an alright option? Car has around 175,000 miles and i doubt either of these parts have been cleaned or replaced. Got the car from my papa and he's one that only does oil changes and tire rotation.
thanks
