Local dealer yesterday claimed their sales managers were told there is only going to be one version(fully loaded, so no extra "package" cars) and it is going to be sold for the same price as the previous "base" model

Why would Acura STYLE magazine speak to the 2011 RL (Summer 2010 edition) if there was no plan for a 2011 model and a jump directly to 2012?

There may be many reasons why the 2011 is not yest revealed including: staging with other model releases, equipment / vendor delays, marketing placement (auto shows), etc.along with the simple need to deplete remianing MY inventory. If they are only selling 3-5K units per year, and this is simply another stop gap until the next generation, the only people buzzing, are.....us.

It is my understanding, this second MMC is to hold over until the next generation. My understanding is the 2011 & 2012 MY units will be built out, retain and trickled down to the dealers (as has the last several MYs). I believe the next generation will be launched sometime in 2012 as the 2013 MY. This also aligns with factory retooling, factory shifts and vendor supply that Honda in stingy to report on. I would see no reason Acura would update the 2011 MY for a one year run and launch the all new generation in 2012 as a 2012 model.

Dealer buzz is simply that. My experience has been I know more about the model itself and the manufacturer pipleline by reading Honda releases and reports than the dealers themselves do. They are salesmen. And what Acura tells them is more to maintain dealer motivation then logistical fact. These sales meetings are pep ralleys IMHO.

I am sure these same dealers gave you the 1st offer on you last car purchase, exactly to your terms and held true to the 'verbal' deal they gave you to the letter.

If what Tampa says is true, Man, that would really suck. I can't believe it ! Originally, I think the 3rd generation RL was supposed to come out in 2011 model year. Then it looks like it was pushed back to the 2012 model year. And now it sounds like the FMC (full model change) won't occur until the 2013 model year ! God damn, what a Bummer ! This information is a total buzz kill. It feels like they keep on pushing it back year after year.

I think many 2G RL owners who would have liked to get a 3G RL are not gonna wait another 2-3 years for the new RL and many will jump ship to other brands.

For a while it did seem like a lot of RL owners were switching to Audi.

Also, an 8 year span (from 2005 to 2012) for 2G RL is way too long ! Especially when other car makers like Infiniti and Lexus, keep updating and refreshing their flag ship models.

Dealers. Know. Nothing. I won't believe this unless Colin comes in and says it's true.

My dealer sources (who don't exaggerate or speculate) don't know any details other than whats been posted. They admit they're usually the last to know anything simply because they sell what they have now or can actually order.

I wouldn't say that's too long considering the 1G RL went from 96-04. Thats right 9 years!

1G Legend went from 86-90
2G Legend went from 91-95

thats 5 years for the really early version, but back then Honda/Acura had something to prove. They need to get back on it.

The next gen RL launch was being staged to coincide with Honda's plan to launch the Acura brand in other global markets (Europe, Russia, Asia and South America). That was delayed due to the global economy (Lexus and Infinity have similar staging issues). Further due to the overlap with the RL / LEGEND, Honda has to retire the LEGEND from some markets before an Acura badge of the same car could be introduced. Could you imagine a Honda LEGEND on a lot down the street from an Acura RL? Further, Honda admits the LEGEND is simply too much car for the global perception of Honda (small, efficient, cost effective, reliable cars). Yet in North America we whine the RL is not enough car. (For me it is JUST RIGHT,,,,but call me Goldylocks).

With the announcement of the retirement of the LEGEND (although is specified only the JDM version) it seems to be in the works, but albeit past target.

This staging for market line up affects launching a new RL (and perhaps clears the way for the LEGEND to return to North America?) as well as the re-thinking of what the Acura flagship will be based on the severity of the market re-direction. That seems to be stretching the model run of this generation. And as I see it, another 2 year MMC for the current model.

Tampa is right. You guys are listening to your dealers too much. If Acura had information they wanted to keep secret, the dealers would be the last people they'd tell. They know nothing more than a well informed consumer.

From what I can deduce, an all new RL is at least 2 calender years away, maybe more. Having said that, another MMC that puts all updated tech into the car like the new MDX and TL, gets the 6at in there, and maybe also adds a few other goodies as we are hearing rumored, may be enough to get me to get another one.
