Custom 4" SRI for my 2G RL

I had this 4 1/2" intake filter sitting around that I bought while in Japan (long story, was going to use on an EVO while I was there).

So I took that and a coupling (4" to 3" from pepboys, lol) and threw it on this 4" intake tube (used another coupling to make up for the bigger diameter on the filter to fit to the tube).

Not the greatest pics..used my cell phone, will take better pics for those interested.

It is slightly better in the top end compared to the K/N 2.5" filter I had on the stock intake hose.

About 60 bucks for this filter...crazy, I get to finally use it 2 years later on my RL, lol

You just put that small filter in the end of the breather hose, that worked also with my Audi TT, didnt get any oil drips from there.
There is no any "air sensor" that you have to install in that throttlebody and filter connecting tube?

I'm not sure what you mean? I never asked about that, I never asked about anything, I'm showing my setup...I did put a filter on the breather tube. Also, I never asked about an air sensor...I'm guessing you replied to the wrong thread?

Or you're as tired as I am, I put 3G RL instead of 2G RL on this thread, lol

We forgive you for your error. 2G RL it is!

Creative solution with the CAI there...

I mean that it is just so easy to put the small filter in the end of the breather tube. You dont have to connect it to the bigger tube if there is no ready connection.
Somewhere was topic about these SRI intakes and i had a impression that some people have been using TL intake kits and if im right there is a connection for some sensor.

Ah, I see, so yeah, I agree...no need to reroute that breather tube. I just threw that filter right on.

On another note, this intake is awesome. This engine really needs to breath and this 4" intake is doing the job. My car feels like it pulls way better in the higher rpms than before. Not like "knock me in my seat power", but definitely noticeable.

What is your little filter behind the tube?

that's where the breather hose would usually flow back into the intake (oil blow back into your intake to be burned). So far, this engine seems to run really clean and I see no signs of any oil on the filter...still looks new. We'll see how it looks after I start driving tomorrow all the way to Baltimore, MD.

Very cool...similar to a mod I just did on my 3G, but I used the OEM piping until the front fender to keep it somewhat cold.

Yours is prettier though.

Does that have anything to do with the EGR system? Excuse my ignorance as I am more savvy behind a radio than under a hood.

There definitely are some threads about a harness that plugs into the intake. Some aftermarket setups have it, some don't. Any ideas on the function of it?

Usually that is IAT (Intake Air Temparature sensor and/or Intake Air pressure) sensor that connects either in the air cleaner box or in that tube, our RL`s dont have it like that, i assume.

^^^That was one of the reasons I did what i did with the oem tubing. The 3G definitely has things that plug into the intake.

I have an oil breather filter too. needed it for my custom cold air intake

So, for 2nd gen RL you can use just plain tube with filter but 3rd gen you have to figure out how you can keep sensor/sensors working.

how hard is it to get the stock airbox out?

I'd consider one of these short ram intakes - but I'd need it to be relatively easy to swap in and out. here in CA - any intake that isn't approved by the state will prevent you from passing smog - which we have to do every two years. I'm due for mine this year.. so I could pass smog - then put on an intake. In two years, i'd likely have to remove the intake, put all the stock stuff back on, then get smogged, then swap back to the intake.

if the stock airbox gets damaged, ruined, broken, etc - when you remove it, and can't be put back.. or if it is some royal PITA to install -i may just not do it... but if it's a simple bolt in job... i'd consider it.

i like how they sound... and from some reports, it sounds like you do gain some top end.

No, not exactly...that's a different part, that looks like this:

The part I replaced with my filter was just a tube that went back into the stock exhaust intake, but had no sensor to worry about...so no issues with CELs or running strange.

yeah, usually you'd see an IAT or MAF (like on my 2011 Si Sedan I had before). I was shocked to see how lucky I was to just swap out this intake and no worries of crazy connections.

Yeah, that's what I did on my 2011 Si...definitely a good idea when you have to worry about more sensors.

Hey, I pm'd you back. But to answer on here, yes, it's so easy, it takes only 10 minutes max to install. You literally just unscrew the top intake box, take that off and the stock filter out. Then unbolt the intake tube that is fitted to intake box and throttle body...comes right off. Then slap this on. It's a monster of an intake compared to the stock diameter of about 3"

There should be no reason for you to mess anything up on the stock intake...it really is easy to take apart. Just make sure to gradually pull out that tube that runs into the intake tube. I noticed the previous owner was a bit crazy with it (perhaps he/she modded this car also before me) and it looked a bit worn out.
