Cruise On/Off Switch

I drove to work this morning and hit set on the cruise and nothing happened. I then switched the cruise enable/disable switch and it would not latch on. I appears that the switch has a broken latch, I think that it was made by the same people who made the cigarette lighter and not an ashtray latch!
I have 3 choices:
1 replace the switch
2 short the wires to permanently enable.
3 jam a folded piece of paper in the switch to hold it in the latched position.

I implemented #3 at the first stop light.
I have no idea why we need an enable switch? I turned mine on in 05 and have never turned it off but that obviously did not stop it from failing. I never used the cigarette lighter either but that failed on its own too.
I have never heard of this failure on this forum so I thought I would let you know of its imminence.

The system is redundant similar to airplane systems. If there is anything controlling the accelerator of a vehicle, you want more than one way to shut it off.

I doubt the latch is the same as the console latches, but I have my for whatever you find out.

I thought that airplanes functioned better when the engine runs!

I will keep the forum posted but I need some help with access to a wiring diagram for the steering wheel and column. I admit that my searching ability is minimal although I try hard and I know that you are resourceful so any help would be appreciated.

The switch is a NO SPST that shorts a brown wire and blue/white stripe wire when pressed. Is that what you were looking for?

Unfortunately, you can only buy all of the switches from the catalog to the tune of $218. Taking apart the wheel is fairly straight forward and simple if you wanted to get back there to see what broke. I can point you to Bob's DIY write up if you please.

EDIT: I believe the brown and blue/white wires are going to be contained within the wheel behind the air bag. The wires on the other side of the harness behind the air bag are pink and black. The black is simply ground.

Thank for all of the help. My interior is Taupe.
007 - Yes I would like the write up of Bob's DIY please.
My jammed piece of paper is holding fine so a nice cruise to work this morning!
I will not be able to work on this for a couple of weeks as I feel compelled to go on vacation!

Aww, shucks: ours just did this. How did the repair go?

Does anyone know the part number, in order that I may begin to search? The dealer specced $328 for the switch...just the part! Good grief!
