Cleaning exhaust pipe?

I just got my RL last month and since it is used it has a bunch of black funk build up all over the chrome exhaust pipes. Does anyone know if its possible to clean off. If so, is it easy and what cleaner do you use. Thanks in advance for any info.

I have used 0000 Iron wool on the tips to take off the black stuff. It works great. Test in a small area first but I have never had any scratches from using them.

Actually, Windex or 409 and a paper towel work well. Those tips are just like a toaster and shine up well with a little windex

Just ordered some Eagle 1 Nevr-Dull online. Thanks Neuronbob. Did you have to use a rag to use it or does it come with one?

The cloth is soaked with the polish, so no. All you need is some elbow grease and the dirt comes right off.

You didn't have to buy it online, you know. Any major auto store carries it. Bought mine at AutoZone.

use 0000 steel wool (home depot has it cheap) and some fantastic or any other multi-surface cleaner, it will easily take all the black junk off and won't scratch.

I just use either a dab of 3M swirl polish or a cleaner carnuba wax on a paper towel. Takes it right off. The better question is WHY there is always the black soot on the tailpipes. Supposedly this was an issue with the '05 and they "fixed" it by using a longer tailpipe. But I have an '07 and it happens just the same. One thing I have noticed is the soot takes longer to build up when I dont use Exxon or Mobil brands of gas (same company), so nowadays I fill up at Shell instead.

my car has 45k miles on it and I 've had it for about 3 months. I suspect the tips were never cleaned, but they weren't that bad at all, just some minor soot that came off very easily.

Just tried this...Fantastik and 0000 steel wool. I had both tips looking like new in about 15 seconds. A couple of sprays of Fantastic and some VERY light rubbing with the steel wool...hardly any pressure at all. No chance of scratching. Followed up with a touch of chrome polish.

Pardon me if I'm out of date but I believe there was a 'fix' introduced to cure, or at least conceal, this issue.

Thanks for the reminder!

However, the issue was actually carbon/soot buildup on the rear bumper. Modified exhaust tips were provided on some 2005 RLs to make up for it. It's not an issue on 2006-up.

RL Exhaust Pipe Cleaning

Friends, I have found the easiest and most effective way to remove the carbon and heat disoloration stains from the exhaust tips is a product called Stainless Steel Brightener made by Cerama Bryte (ceramabryte.com) - or try your local kitchen appliance shop as it's used for cleaning the stainless steel kitchen hobs. All you do is apply a thin coat to the effected area (I use a small paintbrush) wait 45 seconds and then wipe of with a clean cloth or paper towel - it removes everything like magic!, no elbow grease, no polishing, no hassle! Have been using for over 2 years now on my '05 RL and my exhausts tips look like new.

Of course. I thought you were talking about carbon build-up. Sorry!

Still having trouble getting the soot off. I used the Neverdull to no avail. I tried the Fantastik but I didn't have the brillow pad. Still hardly any of it coming off. Any one else have this same problem?

I use Turtle Wax Chrome polish and it works well. This thread reminded me that I haven't done that in a while- finished in less than 10 minutes.

SOS pads work great on the exhaust tips but I don't believe I'd use them on the bumper.

Okay so I finally fixed it. I used the 0000 steel wool with Fantasik. Had to use a little elbow grease but they look pretty good. I couldn't get the inside part of the exhause cleaned but I didn't try that hard. Thanks guys.
