Check Emission System

Check Emission System
Just changed my cabin and engine air filters. Took the car on a very short run. Started car to return home and get "check emission system". Check engine light is on as well. I reseated the gas cap, and check the air filter all looks proper. Could just a change of the air filter cause this error?

That's a faulty transmission range switch. There is actually another thread where beekermartin got the same code you did:

I see that. It happened right after I changed the engine air filter. Directly after! How are the "check emission system" and P1717 even related? This is pissing me off. Any way changing the filter would cause these codes?

Update. had code cleared this morning. Changed my oil and oil filter, drove around a bit and no codes throw so far. Kinda strange, right? Time for a new battery or should I just be thankful and forget about it?

yeah, I double checked everything again. Will see what happens. Thanks again. FYI: grabbed an app called "Torque" It gets all the codes and lets you clear them as long as you have OBDII dongle that goes in port under dash. It connects via bluetooth or wi-fi to your phone. It ALSO gives you readouts of vacuum, throttle position, rpm, etc. It can be set for 60 times, 1/4 mile, etc. Pretty cool app

I have the Lite version which is why I'm curious. The Lite version does allow you to clear the codes, but I've always wondered if it was worth paying for the full version? I'm wondering what the advantage of the full version is if you don't mind elaborating?

Hmmmmm, not sure of the difference then. I was using another app that would not let me clear the codes. My buddy had Torque and cleared the code, so I just bought the paid version. Does the lite version allow you to set multiple car profiles, see rpms, mph, engine temp, vacuum, etc? , My version seems to be able to gather all types of data, 1/4 mile times, 0 to 60, etc.

Three Wheelin'
I've had Torque Pro for several years. It's a great app and has a TON of data. The UI is very dated, but it works fine. I used to use it a lot to check for CEL on my old 2nd gen TL when the cat was failing. I haven't used it much on my other cars as they haven't thrown any CELs yet in their lives.
One time I had to do a smog test for registration (CA) and I'm guessing my cat was on the borderline of failing. It would throw a CEL occasionally before the engine was totally warmed up. You fail the smog test instantly if the CEL is on. I used Torque to clear that code and then drove around for 50 miles so the OBD computer registered no codes. I passed the test! Bought me two more years time before the next test. By then, the cat was totally failed and I had to pony up the $$$ for a new one.
