Car won't recognize either keyfob

I got my 05 RL back from the bodyshop yesterday (they did great work, btw) and have found that the car doesn't recognize either of my keyfobs - no Driver1 or Driver2. All other functions work - lock/unlock/etc. - but I can't take advantage of my customized settings and I can't enter into the menu to customize them as it doesn't recognize either fob as Drvr1 or Drvr2. I had initially thought maybe my fob (Driver 1) was hosed but just repeated the test with the Driver 2 fob (with D1 left in the house) and exact same results.

I've tried the unpair and re-pair sequence (held the lock & unlock buttons down until 2 red LED flashes say it's unpaired then again for a single flash to say it's re-paired). No joy. I can't find anything in the manual that addresses this. Anyone?

Glad to hear the body work was GOOD. Now about Linking the remote:

The instructions in the Quick Start Guide are backwards.
Do the following:
Press and Hold the lock and unlock buttons until you get TWO(2) blinks then the remote is linked to the car.

Now use the transmitttor to unlock the door and go to start the car and you should see welcome Drive 1 (assuming this is the remote you linked.

Now set your mirrors, seat, steering wheel, etc and press "MEM" then Press the blinking "1".

Now do the same for the second remote and you should be good to go.

Good luck,

BL(MedRXMan

Yeah, thanks medrxman. I swung by the dealer (I was out driving - I really missed this car for the week it was in the bodyshop and I was driving that Cherokee rental, blech) and they scratched their heads for a bit, too. Then somebody remembered it was backwards from I guess the way Acura had done it up until this point (why make such a change?) and all was good. I'm happy! In the meantime I was drinking fresh Starbucks and watching March Madness in the dealer's lounge.

Yeah, the bodywork was great. Anybody in the Chicago area that needs work done (And I really hope you don't!) I can't say enough good about Auto Body Unlimited in Downers Grove. They were consumate pro's throughout the whole thing and I feel like they treat every car as if it were their own. I almost didn't get there in time to get my car - traffic on I55 was crazy, almost 2 hours from downtown to Downers - and I pulled into the lot at exactly 5 PM, their closing time. Fortunately somebody else had pulled in about 2 minutes before to pick up her TL.

I'm going to post on the quirks thread that the manual is incorrect regarding the pairing sequence for the fobs.

Karl it's good to hear that you are satisfied with the body work on your RL. I recall when my TL was in a fender bender...2 years ago, it was only 5 days old, and only 104 miles on the odometer. Very minor damage as far as the eye could see. But the repairs went above $5 grand. They totally screwed up my paint job, they forgot to blend the blue metallic flakes in with the black paint. I was driving a two-tone car for about 2 weeks before I realized the front half was jet black..compared to the rest of the car. To make a long story short..I was without my car for a total of 2 months. They never could match the paint correctly, a paint techinician from the Marysville, Ohio Acura plant had to come up to detroit and blend the paints for the bodyshop, $$$$. But good to hear yours was problem and hassle free.

Karl, Glad you got your car back and are happy with the repair work. Just a little 'short-term' memory loss.

Ok...NEW update. Upon further research, I discovered that I must have deprogrammed my keyfob 1 while messing with it yesterday. Just reprogrammed by holding down lock/unlock and we're back. Hopefully this is the end of my door lock escapades. Right now, the lock function is working.

I'm turning to the experts..... Neither of my key FOBs automatically allow the doors to be locked or unlocked with the handles. (They work fine for everything else.) I thought possibly I needed to re-link them but that did not help either. I am guessing there is something wrong with the sensor locking system?? I have seen many posts about the "touch and lock" function not working but in my case pulling the handle does not unlock either. Any suggestions are welcome.

Pulling the handle to unlock was never an option I don't think - the sensor would unlock it. Neither of mine work, even after replacing the passenger door handle. I still have that ugly "Check keyless access system" message.

I can only assume it is the "SMART" computer?

What I also find weird, is say I am sitting in the car with the ignition off completely and windows down - if i stick my hand out the window and touch the handle, the orange, key shaped light flashes....

Keyless Access Module?

Does the car start with the fob or do you have to use the key?

You have mentioned that before - I should look into getting one on ebay to try out - would the keys need to be reprogrammed by the dealer if i change the KAM? (as in, is the KAM programmed to my specific FOB's)

No, the fob serves it purpose for starting the car.

Yeah, my response was mostly to kewinpa. I know we have talked about your issue in another thread. If the car starts, then the KAM is working, or at least that is my understanding. If it is just the handles, I think the issue is elsewhere.

Stupid handles!
I was hoping a KAM would fix my problem.

Well, please don't take my advice as gospel. I have no experience with the KAM or its potential failure modes. I am simply speculating with the knowledge I do have about the system.

Have you read through the Keyless Entry/Ignition System portions of the service manual? Perhaps the troubleshooting there could guide you better than me.
