I'm doing a timing belt change on a 2005 acura rl. for a friend. along with the timing belt, water pump, tensioner and pulleys, do you think i should relpace the cam and crank seals? without having to looked at it yet, I'd like to know if they should be replaced at this milage. new owner of a used car. no service history. Thank you.

 

At that kind of mileage, I would go ahead and replace them, especially if you're planning on keeping the car. If they start leaking, you'd have to redo the whole timing belt to do the job.

Absolutely, Cheap Insurance at that mileage. You may also want to examine a couple other things, while your in there. #1. Check for any evidence of oil leaking from the oil pump seal areas. Such a leak, should be very evident, externally, and would be convenient to repair, in conjunction with the timing belt.. #2. Check the condition of the bearing, on the accessory drive belt tensioner pulley. Checking this bearing, should be done prior to releasing tension on the pulley, with the engine running, using a mechanics stethoscope. If the bearing is noisy, you may as well change it while your in there.

 

Do you know part # for the seals? How hard are they to replace during timing belt installation( do more parts need to come off)?

Honestly.. if your at the mileage where that starts to leak, you might as well replace the whole oil pump for $130. Peace of mind > *

thanks for all the replys. Yes I will change the seals with factory oem. and and all honda parts. Just came in the mail yesterday. The oil pump is a good idea, but since its not my car, i suspect only if its leaking behind the cover will he want to replace it. I am changing the crank seal which is in the front part of the oil pump. Thanks again all.

 

Are these same seals with different part #? Because on oemacuraparts it shows these as 2 different part no's for same seal.
