Brake problem?

Well, my RL has been virtually trouble free the first year I've had it so far, but a couple of problems have now developed.

The first is a rubbing noise coming from the front left tire, not sure if it's the brakes. I hear a rubbing noise at lower speeds, sometimes it sounds like metal on metal other times it just sounds as if something is dragging. Sometimes I hear it when I step on the brakes, but not always, which leads me to believe it may not be a brake problem, though with 51k on the car, it might need new front pads.

Second issue, I think my car also is being affected by the propeller shaft bearing. I drove the car cold yesterday and was going up a hill, and right at 40 mph I could hear a whining noise. Reading the TSB on it and it sounds very close to what I am hearing.

It's going in to the dealer next week. with TSB in hand thanks to this board. Luckily, I'm still in the 1-year CPO warranty, though I also have the Acura extended so unles its the brakes, shouldn't be any charge. Interestingly, the dealer is quoting me $500 for new front brakes, seemed very high and when I called firestone, they wanted just $200, do I need to go to the dealer for brakes on this car?

There's a TSB on the brakes - TSB 05-021. Covers the exact symptoms you're having but it's limited to a certian VIN range. I had it done to my '06 a while ago and they've been silent ever since. Send me an email and I'll forward a copy to you.

While $500 is high, I'd be wary of anyone not using OEM parts on brakes if you want them to be silent. I had a mechanic a who would only use OEM pads when he did brakes. I usually call a couple of dealers for service quotes then my dealer matches the lowest one. Call a couple of other dealers and see what they say but get it checked for the brakes the TSB first.

Well, had my car in to Acura today. Turns out I had a broken rear spring that was rubbing against the rotor. Fixed, no charge.

I also noted a few other things that they are going to fix, including:

1. Soot coming out of the exhaust - they are replacing the tips
2. Propeller shaft bearing - replacing it
3. loose passenger side mirror assembly - they are replacing the entire unit

I'm still well under warranty so no charge for anything other than examining the brakes ($29), which they told me had plenty of life on them, something like 7 mm all around. All parts had to be ordered and will be fixed next Tuesday. Very happy with Acura service!

nice!

.. my brakes squeak alot. At first I thought it was because they were cold/wet in the AM, but they squeak throughout the day.

I checked the TSB, but my VIN falls outside of the squeaky brake range. I bought the car certified with 49,000 and the car has 54,000 now. If the pads aren't low, what else could be causing the squeaks?

how do you know the pads aren't low? Is it possible you don't have OEM pads on the car (should be brembo on the front). If you bought it CPO and only put 5k miles on it, you should still be under warranty, take it to the dealer.
