bell ringing when door open
The first thing that come to mine is....is the key button all the way in "off" mode? If not, the car will "bing" until it's correct.
In other words, is there an issue with the ignition button?

Another possibility is that the headlights are set to "auto" and it is dark out. If memory serves, it does bing at you then.
The real question is, when he gets out of the car and closes the door, will the car lock? Theoretically if the ignition is still in the accessory position, it will not allow the car door to lock if a key is not present within the vehicle.

I enter my car every day in the dark with the lights on auto. I even open the door to get in and that is when the DING starts. I have concluded that the little Japanese guy that programmed the 05 assumes that most people on the NA continent are too stupid to realize that they had in fact opened the door and that they should be Dinged at to let them know.
Now when I get in and close the door the Ding moves to a Dong and that is to tell the stupid people in the NA continent that you should wear a set belt.
I am really surprised that you don't have to listen to a video of a hostess/steward about how to latch your seat belt.
I know most other countries would be insulted by such stupidity and that manufacturers don't have the audacity to offend their clientele but in the USA, for some reason, we tolorate this kind of lunacy.

The seatbelt reminder tone/bell/buzz/alarm is an American innovation, brought to you by Americans for Americans.
The little Japanese fella that designed my RL did it up so mine doesn't ding at me unless I leave the lights on after I shut off the car. I don't do that often, but I think it starts dinging only when I open the door...not sure, since that's usually pretty concurrent with shuttin' her down.
In terms of the belt, if I don't use it a nice lady comes onto the radio and says, "Please fasten your seatbelt" once about every 20 seconds for the first three times. Then, a male voice that sounds like an old sushi chef comes on and says, "Eh, you! Roundeye! Yew crip yore behlt right now!" I tell you what, I clip it.

You mean you don't perma leave the window down and NASCAR it?
This seems to be something on the '05 indicating that the lights are on and the door is open. Ballinger, the ding starts only after the door is open. This is standard on Honda's and has been for some time now. It lets you know that as you are about to leave the vehicle, the lights have been left on. If you leave the ignition in positions I or II, you will get a different tone/frequency that would be the same as leaving the keys in the ignition on another car.
I don't know why the '05 would do this though. Can anyone confirm that their '05 does not behave this way?

If it is dark enough for the lights to come on then it's dark enough to see them on and if you are too stupid to not know that you have opened the door then you are probably too stupid to drive.
If this useless feature is a Honda trademark then it is only in NA as other countries do not have it. I realize that 06 onwards does not Ding so this thread is 05 specific as Honda realized the error of their ways fairly quickly.
The feature is very useful when implemented correctly. It has caught my attention numerous times in multiple Hondas, even when I am not the driver. Like you said, Honda made a mistake in a new design and promptly fixed it. No need to feel your intelligence is insulted.
But since you stated that, Americans have built a public policy of babying the consumer. Putting warning stickers on EVERYTHING to warn of danger protects the manufacturer from liability. For instance, on a lawn mower there is a sticker warning that if you stick your hand in the rotating blade, you may lose your fingers.
On a hair dryer there is a warning to not use it while taking a bath or shower.
The American sue-happy public policies that we have built into our society are to blame, not the Japanese. In Japan, a relatively intelligent society, the consumer would be offended by such asinine warnings, and much of them are left off. Only the less obvious ones are posted so that the consumer is not insulted. It sounds like you would be a happy domestic Japanese consumer. I personally hate the big yellow warning sticker on my visor that I cannot get rid of. No matter how nice the car looks, there will always be an ugly sticker there.

007 - I am surprised that you feel that the feature is useful. The RL will automatically turn the lights off so I must therefore conclude that it is because I opened the door?
I agree the big yellow sticker is a close second in the stupidity list but you can buy new visors from any other country and lose the lawyer BS.

Let me clarify. The feature is not useful when in "Auto" mode. It seems that it would be indicating something is wrong when it isn't. It is useful in "ON" and "Parking-light" modes. It is useful on Hondas that are not in or don't have "Auto" mode. You are absolutely correct that it is stupid in "Auto" mode. It would piss me off too if I were dinged at for something that wouldn't make a difference if I acted or not.
To make it even better most garage attendants will turn the lights to off because of the warning. So you have to be sure to turn them to auto when you get back in the car.
One of the Acura Sevice bulletins was kind of entertaining as it addressed this indicating techs should inform the customer that the chime was one of the "bells & whistles" associated with the new model. Why don't they just admit it was a design flaw so we don't think the designers are just stupid.

I think the dinger is in the instument cluster but I do not know how to remove it. In every other car that I have owned, I have removed the buzzer from the circuit board. Does anybody know how to remove the dash instuments and does the odo trip the "replaced" sensor?

I have never experienced this. What exactly are you talking about?
