arguments for original windshield insurance claim
arguments for original windshield insurance claim
I have a huge crack on my windshield that needs to be replaced. I wanna do this under insurance but a few places that I had a chat with told me that insurance companies wont pay for an original windshield. I haven't made a claim yet but what could be some good arguments to make a point for me to nail a oem. I dont wanna let this go without a fight.
By the way, my actual windshield is not oem ( by ASAHI ) either. Its made by PPG, replaced by the previous owner and I've got rust spots on the edge of my roofline, probably caused by a poor install job.

Someone will have to look at the window unless they are just going to agree over the phone to replace it. if they do then argue that the car comes with acoustic glass from the factory and that you purchased this vehicle for its luxury options and wish to retain those luxury options
One of the places that run my VIN in his system said that it doesn't indicate that the RL has an acoustic glass. I will check that again with another shop. Another big store here that does windshields told me their supplier is XYG. There's lots of negative reviews for that. If my efforts go in vain, what would be a good aftermarket glass for RL. ?
well, all you have to say is "I want this certain brand"
if they dont have it; find someone that does.
on the TL side; we have concluded that AP tech is our oem glass. this may or may not be true for the RL.
we also have found that Safelite is NOT A GOOD CHOICE for a window install. They use less than OEM glass and sometimes shoddy installs.
while searching for information for this thread, i came across this gem:

That's only true if buying Safelite (or similar) glass not manufactured AND STAMPED by one of the OEM distributor glass companies (AP Tech, PPG, Pilkington).
In fact, we've (me included) been using incorrect terminology when referring to differences in glass.
There are actually 3 terms/types of glass:
Dealer
OEM distributor
Aftermarket or Original Equipment Equivalent (may be manufactured by any glass company, but doesn't meet OEM specs).
Both dealer (made by the company who has the glass contract for the auto company) and OEM distributor (AP tech, PPG, Pilkington) glass are made to full OEM specifications and thickness.
Dealer glass will have the "Acura" stamp on the glass. OEM distributor glass will not, but it's virtually identical to dealer glass.
Aftermarket glass or OEE (Safelite, etc) does not conform to OEM specifications in most cases and may actually be thinner than OEM specifications.
Bottom line, if manufactured by AP Tech, Pilkington or PPG with the respective company stamp, it should be identical to dealer glass. Just make sure it says OEM glass or OEM specs...

In the case of RL, the dealer glass is provided and made by Asahi. So if Im looking for oem specs, I could go with a Asahi made glass minus the Acura stamp but I dunno if they are available in north america from another outlet then the dealer. The other Acuras that are made in US or Canada have AP Tech as their glass supplier but what I want to know is whether AP Tech or PPG make their RL glass to oem Asahi specs ???
I went with after market PPG and it's dissapointing. Definitely go with Acura. My Ins Co said that if I go aftermarket then they will sent the guy to my house and install it. If I want Acura then that is an option too but you have to take it to Acura and leave it overnight. Either way the Ins Co will cover the cost less my $250 deductable. I think the after market was approx 500 and the Acura glass was $900 but either one would only cost me my deductable.
Definitely Acura glass is the only way to go.
Definitely Acura glass is the only way to go.
I just went thru this with USAA and the state insurance commissioner. Go to your Acura dealer and plead with them to help you. They can sell you the FACTORY glass and arrange to have it installed for about $300 more than the places your insurance will send you to for CHINESE glass. The insurance company will install a cheap chinese windshield instead of the factory unit and arguing is a waste of time as the laws are now in favor of the insurance companies. REGARDLESS of what the actual law says. They know you won't spend a billion dollars to get to the supreme court and if you do get there they'll greet you coming back from lunch with their senator friends. Next time move to a state that allows a policy that can have a rider for factory parts. What I am telling you is 100% true. It took me 2 months to learn that you are basically screwed because the state and the insurance companies see you as their personal cash cow. That or start a revolution like the French did in 1791 and hang all the insurance managers and CEO's.

Wow all these talk about glass costing $900. Here in CT I have glass coverage in my policy so it is absolutely free and I can take it anywher and get any glass I chose. This must be a state by state regulation situation. By the way USAA insurance is a SHAM in my opinion. I Was in the millitary for six years and banked and insured with them for ten years until I needed to make a claim for an accident that was not my fault but had to use my insurance because the person who hit me did not have insurance. Long story short, they faught me tooth and nail all the way refusing to fix damage caused by the accident as they claimed it was wear and tare despite the dealer mechanics arguing otherwise on my behalf. That was all it took for me to packup my acounts and investments and leave.. my advise to you is GET RID OF USAA.

I have been with USAA for 35 years and have had no problem getting OEM glass replacements multiple times ($100 deductible). I had the windshield in my 95 Legend coupe replaced 5 times in 140,000 miles. I also got the glass replaced twice in my 2004 TL. Once in about 1998, I did not insist on OEM and got a "wavy glass" replacement that I had them replace again. Just insist on OEM replacement - it is your right to get the equivalent (OEM) with any insurance.
