ANC...... what the real info is

First off Automatic Noise Cancelling cannot be turned off.
It is not controlled by any menu selectable item.
And, despite what the salesman, told me ANC is on whether the aduio system is on or off. It is an intregal function of the cars noise supression system and the car sounds awful when it is not functioning. Want proof? Just put your finger over the round hole (microphone) just back from the rear window sunshade switch. Try doing it in all sorts of situations including the car at idle. With the microphone blocked the system no longer has low frequency supression capability.
Pretty impressive!
Gets rid of hundreds of pounds of sound insulation and uses the existing sub woofer.

Yes, it is very impressive technology.
Somebody please tell me what audio pilot is.....
Push the "audio" button
Push the round button downwards (so you can get to the other menus)
Go to "sound"
Go down the menu to "audio pilot."

You can turn this on and off.

Read the description = "Audio pilot noise compensation technology. Reduces the effects of outside noise"

Increases the volume of the audio system to compensate for outside noise.

what I'd love to see is the next Lexus LS use the ANC technology in addition to its sound deadening materials. That would be incredible.

OH! Thanks for the explanation. Don't I feel like an idiot.

But as far as your post, yes it is impressive - I had done that on the test drive after somebody had suggested trying that.

I do not think AudioPilot is the same as ANC.

2 seperate technologies.

Auto Pilot increases the volume of the sound system to compensate for road noise. It can be turned on or off on the audio setup screen.

Active Noise Cancellation is a full time system that cancells out low frequency road noise by generating sound waves 180 degress out of phase.

It can not be turned off and works whether the audio system is on or off.

Sorry to have thrown that a little off topic earlier.

I would be curious to see how much louder it actually is when you cover up the mic (in dbs). I know our ears can simply tell us, but an actual number would be interesting to see.

I have a sound meter if I can remember to put it in the car.

I would appreciate it if you get a chance. Did acura simply take out sound deadening material all over the car? Or just some places? I wonder if getting material and putting it in will make the car at all quieter. If memory serves me somebody over in the TL forums put some sort of material that they bought at a hardware store (used for roofing) but was a lot cheaper than dynamat.

I thinkt hey took out a lot of excess in material where other manus would ahve put it and they possibly lightened up the materials in other non-key areas.

Part of me likes it but part me likes having the material there rather than relying on an electronic system to do this job as the system could break and the car would sound horrible if it broke.

I agree....but it is cool technology!
I bet in the future this white noise technology will be expanded & used by other automakers.
Nice to see the RL is 1st. using this cutting edge technology (at least on autos).

What are the chances that the ANC could have a negative impact on certain low frequencies that could be generated while listening to the audio system ? It would seem that the ANC works in the low audible range and it could possibly overlap part of the low range generated by a music source.

Since this technology can allow a car manufacturer to dispense with a certain amount of sound insulation, this would be a relative inexpensive means of increasing gas mileage/performance by decreasing the weight of a vehicle. The better the noise reduction technology the more sound insulation that can be shed.

I did a measurement:

Check out the Bose Noise cancelling headphones if you have any doubts about the technology. They make a plane trip almost silent.
The phones also work without audio input, just turn them on.

Now that I have thought about it, the method by which this can be alleviated is by feeding the low frequency electrical signal component from the audio system into the ANC. The ANC would be designed to ignore any sound frequencies from the ANC microphone that are in the same frequency range and that match the waveform of the audio signal fed into the ANC.

Not really related to the RL - but ANC is going to be in the 2006 Pilot.

I am dissapointed with the ANC.... it only seems to block out low freq's... not wind or tire noise... anyone else agree with me??

Yes. I am sure if somebody put the sound deadening material (I know weight was the reason for pulling it out and using ANC) the car would be much quieter. I wonder how much it would cost to use dynamat in the entire car? I imagine a lot.

How about using the "cone of silence" from "Get Smart"?
