Bought 2008 RL tech package car recently. Back up camera is horrible for poor brightness and sharpness.

What does it take to replace with after market camera?

I got a loaner from dealer 2018 ILX which has exceptional back up camera

For few hundred bucks , I can get decent camera but would it be a drop in replacement?

I don't have an answer for you, but I think the camera on my 2016 ILX is just average. It's the same one as that 2018 you drove. You should check out BMW's cameras. They are one of the best. So crisp and clear.

 

I don't think any replacement would be drop in. I'd imagine most things require some type of wiring modification at the very least.
