2006 question

while discussing some service items today on my 2006 RL, the question of brake grab came up. The service writer whom I have known a long time and who has always been good to me looked up records on my RL including the brake service right before I bought it, and told me as I understood it - "Steve, your pads and rotors on the front are made by Brembo and they are different pads and calipers than standard calipers. They grab more than standard RL pads and calipers."

I have read that our brakes are only Brembo copies made by someone else I am now confused. What brakes do I have? Is there something special about these?

Is your car a A-spec? They have different brakes from what I understand.

I don't know and there are no logos or special bumpers but the thing sure rides stiff and twitchy.

I'm not aware of any brake upgrades from the A-Spec kit.

I might be mistaken. I thought that I read somewhere that the A-spec car got not only new rims, but bigger brakes to go with them.

no brembo pads

advics a japan brand are on RL. just go to parts dept ask to see front pads for RL it said ADVICS. brembo does not make pads for the RL. the dealers know this but want more money fore the bigger pads! but you can go aftermarket for cheaper cost.... acura should stop dealers from lying to RL owners..

This thread is proof that a lot of people have opinions but not many have facts.

how about the picture I inserted last night. Does it help identify what brakes these are?

You said it!

They are NOT Brembos.

2G Acura RL Aluminium 4 piston front brake calipers are made by Advics, as are the brake pads.

There are no different calipers or pads made for "A-Spec" RL's.

A-Spec RL packages are appearance items (front and rear bumper, rear decklid spoiler and side skirts), wheels (18" x 8", +55 mm offset) and tires (Acura recommended 245/45-18 Miichelin Pilot Sport PS2 summers; Pilot Sport A/S or A/S Plus UPAS or Pilot HX MXM4 GTAS) and sport suspension (new front and rear springs and dampers).

Chas2 - so you would say these are stock brake calipers on all 2006 RL's. Is that correct?

Correct!
Every 2005+ RL i have seen comes with these calipers and they are NOT Brembo. The brake pads are the same for A-spec and non-Aspec cars.

Aftermarket pads work well. Check tirerack.com and some other web sites for brake pad alternatives. I got Axxis ULTimate front pads for my 06 RL. Planning to install them this or next weekend.

Thank you for clarifying about the brakes. I heard wrong. ADVICS it is.

Correct. Also see danmm7 reply, and 037 will tell you to get Satisfied Gran Sports from tire rack

how about rotors? Factory or aftermarket? Looks like chinese aftermarket are all that come up. I saw Raybestos and Centrics as available and I think both those are made in china. ATE and Brembo don't list front rotors for the 2006 RL yet.

Look at Centric rotors if you don't want OEM. They seem to be well made.
